Making rooms for toms

Just wondering what some of you mixers out there do to make room for toms. Just did a project Andy Wallace mixed and it's amazing how much room those babies have to breathe- especially the low end. Thoughts?

A lot of people ride toms fils up.

They might make a sub group of overheads and toms that lives outside the main drum bus - compression so they can push it up and not mess up the main drumsound. The sub roup could be compressed and have it's own eq etc.

All sorts of ways to manage it.

I imagine Andy does a lot of automation even with fills considering everything I've read and heard.

I like to mute everything but the tom hits in Sonar and then I ride the fill depending where it appears in the song. I also tend to bus them together and although the individual tracks might be feeding the parallel comp the bus goes to the master.
