JM-27

Regarding my pair of JM-27's ... they pretty much suck. Perhaps ok for drum overheads, but no luck with acoustic guitar which is why I bought them. Even with a good pre, they are mediocre at best.

"For the price" they are ok to have around. I think I paid $100 new for 2 with shock mounts on Ebay. Perhaps with some modification (they have a transformer, unlike MXL 603), they might sound better, but I would rather save for a much better mic.

My C1000 sounds stellar on acoustic guitar compared to the JM-27's.

Before recording any new vocalist I test the following mics for their voice:
AT 4047
Groove Tubes AM62
Beesneez Jade

The Jade pretty much wins every time.

I mainly use Brauner VMA and Gefell UM75. I don´t own them, but I have them available almost all the time.
My own are UM70 and Brauner Phanthera. One of those 4 is always a good choice.

Yes, there was such a mic (go to the Neumann web site and look under historical products). I have 2 older U87 mics, but the U77 always sounds better to me on vocals than the U87. Some day I hope to own a U67, but until then my U77 gets a lot of use.

Worn looking short body Neumann U47 w/VF14, recently tuned up by Bill Bradley. Mic > API 3124+ > DAW. Typically I cut below 50hz in the DAW to kill the fridge, street, and/or any singer foot tap rumble. Otherwise I typically mix the mic flat, then EQ everything else around it and call it done.

Another vote for Pearlman

A - For jazz/folk/nice Pearlman TM1 (or if it's otherwise engaged an AT 4047 or AT 4050)

B - For rock/dirty Shure SM7b (or if it's otherwise engaged a Kel HM-2D)
