Apogee PSX100 Vs Cranesong Hedd

Im in the market for a new converter and was just wondering which one is the winner.

Hmmmm tricky one!

The Apogee can act as 3 source digital monitor

The Cranesong can only deal with 2 sources at a time, but it has the tape & valve processing section.

From the perspective of sonics... the Crane Song... from the perspective of 'features'... the PSX-100 withe "SE" upgrade.

FWIW, I have the PSX (with the upgrade), and I'm very interested in the HEDD. UV22 aside, The PSX is a great unit that does a lot. But it's the Tape and Valve stuff that really interests me about the Crane Song yuktyy

I cant live without the Tape & Valve sound from the Cranesong on my mixes..

At 96k it is sublime sounding...

I know the AD8000SE only. in a shootout at 44.1 I prefered:

the Cranesong AD
and the Apogee DA

(no processing)

I have not tried the PSX unit. Friends say it (and the Trak2) are great, and a step up from the AD8K.

Hey Jules,

I could be wrong here, but from what I can gather, a recent AD8K SE with the latest Apogee cards/clock versions should sound as good as the PSX100SE or Trak2.

I can confirm with our AD8000 collection that the newer AD8000s sound better than the older ones.

JFernandez,

I use the PSX100SE as converter front end and clock source to the Masterlink for putting down my mixes and it sounds great.

But like Fletcher sez, the features are perhaps more important. The features I use the most are the UV22HR down to 16 bits and, above all, the extensive routing that allows the PSX to receive and feed AES/spdif/Optical Fiber to various CD and DAT machines. When comparing my mix in progress post-UV22HR and post-ADDA to a commercial CD linked to the PSX, I can compare the two using the same clock and converters. This is VERY important IMNSHO when comparing mixes in the studio.

This CAN be done also with the Cranesong.

I am using it at the moment to make 96k masters on my Masterlink - it sounds AMAZING.

Apogee are SUPER COOL about servising owners with upgrades!

Jules,
I'm trying to picture how you are using the HEDD at 96k. That is, I thought your recordings were done at 48k on a PT Mix + rig.

Are you sending the 48k mix thru the HEDD at 96k? Upsampling, as it were? I guess that would be the simple answer. In this case, I would assume the processing from the HEDD acts as an additive effect despite the mix being 48k. Must not be all that subtle then... and/or I imagine the effect can be dialed in to preference.

At present my mix is created by sending the 48k 24bit PT session out from the Mix + cards to 2 x PT interface cards in a Prism Dream ADA converter fitted with 2 x 8ch DA cards feeding a 16 into 2 analog mixer (Dangerous 2 Bus) with an SSL compressor strapped across the outs then capturing that 2 channel compressed analog signal with the Cranesong set to 96k (independent from the 'house 48k' clock) finally feeding a Masterlink & recording at 96k 24bit. The Masterlink receives its clock from the Cranesong.

I hope that lets the cat out of the bag!

Jules, I'd love to hear how those Prisms and the Dangerous sound.

Reading your last post, it struck me how similar our PT mix methods have become over the years...

PT outs to
decent converters to
outboard goodies and
analog board / summing 2-buss to
SSL comp / other toys to
a separate master converter feeding a masterlink at 96k

Who's to say that's a cat? Why wouldn't it be an oppossum, a raccoon, or even a ferret? Hell it could be the dingo that ate ya baby!!

Just because it walks like a cat, meows like a cat, lives domesticated in a home with humans, and licks itself where I can't lick myself, DOES THAT MAKE IT CAT?

Ok, scaring myself. Can't sleep! Clowns will eat me!
