Kick Sounds

Friday I'm going to test a bunch of kick sounds via new 421, AE2500, D6, and E908D mics. I'm thinking the small 908 on the batter side could work to blend with a D6 or 421 in the kick. Pres are API 3124, Chandler TG2, and Neve 1073 DPA. I've had good luck with just a D6 and the TG2, any thoughts on the best 2 or 3 mic blend with these mics and pres? I haven't really explored the AE2500 much yet.

Make sure the drum is tuned well and the dude using it knows how to play it. The rest is simple.

I've found that a D112 or any other kick mic works great with an e609, a 421 or an SM57 on the batter side. Great sounds if placed right. Since you have the 421, try that :o)

Sennheiser e602II has really changed things for me. But in a few months I'll probably get re-frustrated and start a new quest.

I love the E602. Mine is the original one, great kick sounds. I like all of Sennheiser's mics.

First: I mostly work in the rock realm, never jazz. i like a lively kick.

I know it is not on your list, but on recording.org forums about a year ago, there was a shootout which included mics on your list and some others.

I own and use a d112 all the time, usually in conjunction with others, but to be honest I think I like the beta 52 better. It seemed to yield the sound I liked with no eq compared to the d112 in the shootout.

I also think the 421 will impress you for a much different reason than the beta52.

Thanks for the info.

Yeah, I've got the D112 as well. I'll try more of that one also. The 421 will be cool, thanks for the batter side info, it's a new model 421 so not quite the same as the old ones, but still a nice mic. EV could be nice, and something like a 47 FET would rule, one day. I'm digging the subkick idea - never thought about buying one until I read that post.

Here for the gear

I've always loved either a 421 or RE20. Lately I've fallen in love with the Beta 52. It doesn't seem to get much love, though.

I have been using the EV nd868 and have been real happy. Use the Neve with your choice.

Yeah man

I've been hearing about this beyer M88 for awhile. Went to the site, like how it says, "Legendary sound for vocals, bass drum..." That's awesome. I'm going to be testing things for awhile. I need to sell some mics I never use.

I've usually got one on guitar and one on scratch vocal because the rejection is so good I can sometimes use the scratch. I haven't put an M88 in the BD in a while. I love that mic!

I've been using SM7B inside. Or AT4040 outside the hole.

Frankly, the D112 sucks the big weenie IMHO. It is definitely NOT a replacement for the D12/D12E/D20/D25, which AKG claims it is. Nowhere close.

If you want that classic Brit kick sound get yourself a D12E.

Another nice, meaty kick mic is the E-V N/D868, although I use that more often on bass guitar. It's a nice, fat mic that needs little, if any, EQ.

The other classic choice for kick is the E-V RE20 (PL20). Because this mic has no proximity effect it doesn't get boomy with placement, giving a drier sound. In some cases it may want a bit more EQ than the others.

The BeyerDynamic M88 is (I hate to use this word) awesome on nearly anything you use it on. A great kick mic and Phil Collins' choice for live vocals.

Thanks for those recommendations

I just posted to another kick trail in high end, good weekend experiments, got decent TG2 with D6 or Audio Technica 2500 (just the condenser portion) tones. D112 couldn't get happening, 421 was okay, AT2500 condenser and D6 could be a nice combo. It's workable, that condenser at similar gain must have captured lower tones because the headphones were rattling on my head where the dynamics just had a solid sound. My best results were to use the mics at the kick hole in the front head pointing in at an angle on the 22" kick. Workable sound hopefully won't need any EQ once I get better with placements.
