Clever Uses for 609s?

Hey folks. Just found a 609 floating around the studio and with my usual desire to always try new things on sessions, I have one tomorrow that I'd love to throw this thing on.

Obviously, guitars and bass cabs could be cool with it, but what about toms? Snares? Hanging from the ceiling above the drummers head? Laying down in the back of a guitar cab? Distant sax mic? Anything. Just curious. Would love some new ideas with it. Thanks!

I use 609s more on toms than anything else.

I've used them as "under tom" mics when I'm double mic'ing toms...

Awesome! I'm always looking for a 421 killer [in a good way. I love that mic on toms so much that anything that sounds better is great].

With toms, I always find, as with most instruments, the same mic/pre combo doesn't always work. Example: 604s-killer on some toms, awful on others.

I've been digging Josephson c42's and 57's on them recently. I've had some pretty groovy results.

Other than guitar cabs I've used them on toms and snare bottoms. Basically anything I would use an SM57 for, which maybe is not that clever.

I use them on snare tops (509s, actually).

They work well for horns, and I kinda like them on vocals.

I don't think they are better than 421s for drums, so they might not reach "killer" status.

Like it on snare bottoms... never tried this particular mic behind the cab on guitar -- I'll have to give that a go.

wildest thing I can think of is have the Mic swinging behind the drummer

at one point i wanted to make a pendulum out of a omni condenser
once was Cardiod

It was actually a Mic I made out 2by4 SP1 never finished it

could also tape a drum stick to it and make it a mono spinny

I love the 609/906 for all SM57 applications...sometimes more than the 57...I usually get a better amp tone from a 609/906 than with a 57...

I really do love these mic's, tho i neglect them routinely.

...def try toms and snare, but won't beat a 57 on snare from my experience.
