Super noob question re: wordclock

I know this is gonna sound stupid, but please be gentle with the flames.

What is a word clock, and what exactly does it do? Why would I want to use it in conjunction with my protools LE system (to cut down on latency? Or is that notion also completely out to lunch?).

Thanks in advance!

your digi clocks to itself, you'll only need to use wordclock with your digi if you integrate other digital pieces with your 002. Don't worry about analog gear, as there will not be audible latency with analog.
