What do you guys think???

I need you guy's help. Here are 3 quick clips of different speaker/cab combos. All are the same mics, pres, amp, settings and guitar.

What are your thoughts? How does the sound differ? Which do you prefer for what kind of music and why?

Cab 1 Setup, M/Neve

Listening on my laptop speakers I like clip 1 the best...whatever thats worth. It sounds more present, up front, in your face...has some bite to it I like too. 2 sounds more veiled, and 3 is kinda boxy...

What were the speakers and cabs used?

Thanks, my feeling too. Cab 1, 2 and 4 is the Scumback/Marshall straight with M75's, the difference is:

Cab 1 has a 57>Neve 1272 & 421>API
Cab 2 has a 57>Montessi Red & 421>API
Cab 4 has a 57>Neve 1073 & 421>API

Cab 3 is the Orange cab with
H75 - 57>Neve 1272
V30 - 421>API

I actually like the 2nd the best, but it's a close call with number 1 and 2.

Don't like the 3rd..

Wait, wait... the one, listened alone is quite sure the better one, the second is near close, but as I hear it thru my headphones (Senn HD25…), the third one could be, even if it lacks a lot of many frequencies, the better one to set in a mix... don't you think so ? Too much frenquency "spread" is not always the better for a mix and drives you to massive EQ corrections to get IN the mix... isn't it ?

Would have been interesting to hear those samples with a bass and drums background...

I dig 2 most because of it's clarity for a dense mix then 1, 3 sucks.

I thought 1 and 3 would compliment one another pretty well.

1 does have a good supply of everything though. Lo end power and nice sounding highs.

I thought 2 was a polar opposite of 1, didn't really like it.

My list:

2 - gutsy and full, obvious ear-catcher
1 - very nice, balanced, perhaps better for some mixes
3 - well, it would work, but its not super

To me, 2 is clearly the worst (how's that for mixing things up?). There's something weird in the mids on 2, sounds kind of resonant. Whatever -- I really don't like it.

1 has all the benefits of 2 (strong mid-range) without the flaws. I'd rate 1 the highest. I understand why some are picking 3 as their least favorite, it's much more scooped, kind of thin sounding, totally different sound, but in the context of a mix I think 3 would be better to work with than 2. In fact it's entirely possible 3 could be the best in the mix, depending on the overall tone you're going for.

Here's one more, this is the same cab as 1 & 2 but with a Neve 1073 on the 57 instead of the Neve 1272:

2 has a very tight sound to it that I like, and less of that "tizzy" top end buzz.

In a mix, any of them could win (OK 3 does have a lacking quality to it...).

It's hard to tell what will work without the music. But solo'd 1 and 3 sound best to my ears. 3's got more mids and 1 is more scooped. Maybe use 1 as the main and pull in 3 during the chorus or whenever you want it to be more prominent.

1 is the closest to the money for me.... 2 has too much upper mid that is masking some of the grunt and makes it sound sloppy and unfocused.... 3 bit too muddy for my liking but with a bit of EQ to add some sparkle and a bit more shove in the bottom end, might work... 1 sounds best all round to me..

Not much in it for my money. I prefer the Low mids of your last clip, a bit more "whoompf" than the 1272 but with a similar smooth top end.
Maybe better for more modern sounding tones?

I'd still pick #1 though.

Great stuff James. TYVM for posting these clips.

Here for the gear

I like 3

I'll be one of the nay sayers here and go with number 3 as my fav. I think that it would work quite well as an up front rhythm track sound. I like the midrange. By itself it may not sound the best, but I think that it would be great in a mix.

I'm trying to not even read what each description is as I rifle through & listen to the clips, but the 1st one definitely kicks ass; the 2nd one sounds OK, but also has some weird artifacts & noise that I don't like at all; the 3rd one sounds very tight - like a processed mix track - which could be good or bad, depending on what you're looking for; and the 4th one has the least character out of the bunch, in my opinion.

So, what do I win? lol
