Shure SM7B / Preamp / Mixer - help w/ Setup?

Hi guys

please excuse my royal ignorance as I am new to all of this.

I record using my PC w/ Sony Acid. I run mics & instruments through a Tapco FX 220 Mixer and run THAT directly into the back of my PC.

in a few days, I will have a new mic (Shure SM7B)
and a mic/preamp -ART ProMPA II Applied Research & Technology: Tube Mic Preamps

I've never used a preamp before but was told I would need one with the SM7B.

There is so much stuff I dont understand about the preamp.
plate voltage -
input impedance control-
the +4/-10 switch - (+4DBU / - 10dBV)

Im worried I will blow my mixer or soundcard or mic (if possible)
How does one find out the correct settings for this stuff?

Also, Would I simply run the preamp (out) into my mixer's mic INPUT?) XLR?

Also, the settings on the SM7B

What is bass roll off? and How do I know what settings for the mic to use..

Again, sorry for the ignorance here.

sm7b > art pre via xlr. for vocals i'd set the roll-off on the mic. out of preamp to your mixer. i don't know your mixer but if it has an "insert" then it most likely will be a 1/4" trs IN. buy an XLR to 1/4"trs cable to come from the output of your art to the mixer.

you din't say what soundcard you have, but i'll guess it's just a cheapo. i'm sure your mixer will have rca out's. come out of your rca to the rca in's on your s/card. if you don't have rca IN's, then you need an adapter or cable that goes rca to 1/8" mini jack in to your s/card.

now, if you're simply recording a "live feed" with no overdubs, you're ok. if you intend on doing overdubs at some point, good luck. you're going to experience hellacious latency that will = no joy. you're better off even getting a cheap usb 2.0 interface than trying to do this straight to a consumer s/card.

I would run the Line Out from the MPA II to the Line In on your mixing board.

Jnoid, i would not connect the line out from the ART preamp to your mixer, and from there send your audio into the computer, this will only degrade the sound!

Microphone to XLR-in on the ART, and connect the ARTs line out directly to your computer. If you use your mixer for monitoring without latency, buy a split-cable (Y-cable) so you can send one line (super clean) to your computer and the other to your mixer where it can blend with your already recorded audio, but just for monitoring purposes.

Good luck!
