I was curious to know which power amp to get for my Yamaha NS 10's.
Bryston 2B was originally my choice but I haven't been able to find one. An acquaintence mentioned a Crown amp but I forgot the model. Or is there another amp to consider?
Go onto www.audiogon.com There is always a lot of used Bryston amps on there for good prices. Lots of 3bst and 4bst amps. Auidiogon is like an all audio ebay.
I got the Hafler P3000, and it works pretty dang well for the price.
They are my "second" monitors rather than my primary set...
Thanks for all the great suggestions so far! Keep the coming!
Just as a side note, was curious to know if anyone here uses NS 10's for primary set. I've been using computer speakers and managed to get nominated last year for a national TV award project I mixed with them and it worked really well. So that's what I'm moving from.
Also curious to know is a sub for the NS 10's necessary.
Bryston 4bst here and I love it. Haven't got to try the Adcom's or the Perreaux so unfortunately I can't compare the difference but I'd definately be game to try them out at some point.
Don't know if it is *necessary*, but they are definitely a bit "bass-light" on their own.
imo that's one of their biggest strengths, it forces me to get the midbass zone dialed. if i can track the bassline on the 10's and feel it on the mains, i'm home free.
big bonus points if i can get the bass to sound round and warm on the 10's. it's all about the 100hz to 300hz relationship, ime.
I use an older JBL SA660, which I think sounds great. IMHO, the NS-10s are perfect for seeing if a mix is coming together. If the drums is over here and the guitar and vocals is over there, they'll tell you more quickly than something with a bigger spectrum. They really address the "music" part of the music, for lack of a better term.
i can't get any of thses amps around here, how will the QUAD 405 work ?
The Quad 405 is a good match with NS10's in my opinion - it seems to tame their worst excesses although I wouldn't want to use them as my only speakers anyway. In fact, my NS10's have been relegated to the kitchen next to the studio for the last 6 years and no-one has asked for them to be moved back into the studio for a session.
