local record store names across us/canada

hi all,
starting to ship product for my new label this week. trying to get my first run of 12" vinyl into stores in sf/la/chi/atl/ny this month. can people who are familiar with these cities hit me up with a list of great record stores (who stock hiphop vinyl) you think would be willing to push new independent labels? i am also interested in other major metro areas across the us and canada. for me so far this has boiled down to local shops and not chains. its best if the buyers work at the store so i can contact them directly by phone or in person. if anyone actually knows some of the buyers by name/phone number that would be great too! thanks in advance. cheers.

That's awesome! I wish you success.

Can't go wrong with Fat Beats in Hollywood. They're on Melrose. You might oughta hit up Aron's and Amoeba while you're at it.

Not that you mentioned it, but Waterloo in Austin has a nice section of 12" stuff.

there 's a place in new york on east third street that is called
dance tracks...............i don't know anything more than its full of 12"'s
new or old i don't know...........

also, the tower records on 4th and broadway has a vinyl buyer named chuck -
i don't know him very well - this is from the top of my head but i think their main
# is (212) 505 - 1500 - the vinyl section is his baby - and the nice
thing is - he's a music guy - i know him from talking about frank sinatra and jimi
hendrix - just to show two very different spectrums.........i always love seeing
people with some sort power in this business who really love music - call him
find out if you can send him something - i don't know how he works, but
he'll probably listen, and he loves music.......
his purchases are from what i can see, free of corportate influence.........

also check modo kim's nyc
and remember that, i think with some chains , the vinyl section might actually
be the freeest place in the store......ie w/ individual buyers

good luck
vinyl is a beautiful
thing

Vinyl Fetish in LA (don't know what styles they do, though)... and definitely try Amoeba.

Good luck, and let us know which shops work out.

Scratch Records in Vancouver. I dunno about vinyl, but they stock indie hip hop. They are also a record label and it's easy to find if you Google it. The guys there seem pretty cool.
punkottawa.com is a website put together by Shawn Scallen and it has a hugely comprehensive list of venues/stores. There is definitely a hip hop audience there.
Hope that helps.

Hey, I aksed my girlfriend and she reminded me of two more in LA:

DMC records in Hollywood and Rehab in West LA. I remember Rehab being pretty active in the Hip Hop community.

I don't know the names of any of the buyers, but at least at the small ones, probably you can get who you need on the phone pretty easily.

Oh, BTW, there's a Fat Beats store in Manhattan too. I know it's on 6th Ave. but I don't remember the x-street. 8th or 9th I think. It's been a spell.

Also check out A-1 in the East Village.

I was just reading a piece in my local paper about one of Edmonton's best and oldest vinyl shops having to close down after all these years. Sad.
