presumed ubiquitous

I find it weird when anyone's list does not include the Beatles. I know it's wrong of me, but I kind of consider that to be a universal. In college, we did this sort of thing by saying "List your top ten favorite non-Beatles albums." And I went to college in the mid-'90s.

probably not regarded as the greatest of all time... but here is the list that defines me and my musical sense... don't knock my choices until you go and listen to that particular record by that band or artist tutt .

these are in no particular order at all.

TOTO IV- great playing, great arranging, great recording, great producing, great mixing, a little to clean and perfect/pretty for my tastes today but i'd be dishonest if i didn't include it. these musicians are some of my favorite of all time... i was 10 years old when it came out.

Keith Jarrett- Bye Bye Blackbird
Bruce Hornsby - 'the way it is' and 'scenes from the southside'
Steely Dan- Katy Lied

The Clark Sisters- Conqueror
Todd Rundgren- Nearly Human
Yellowjackets- Run For Your Life

Eric Johnson- Ah Via Musicom
U2- The Joshua Tree

I've never heard the term "buttrock" before. Very funny. I can't wait to use it. However, I wouldn't class Leonard Cohen as rock at all, and have no idea if he is gay. Is he ?
Nevertheless, my top 15 (not in order) would be:

Floyd - Darkside
Beatles - Sgt. Pepper
Zeppelin - I
Zappa/Mothers - Overnite sensation

I pretty much like everything xtc has ever done. I was just listening to the dukes of the stratosphere at lunch today.

In the mid 80s someone gave me a casette of some andy partridge demos he was doing for the movie james and the giant peach--which he ended up not doing. I wonder if that was ever released?

15 seems to be a rather arbitrary number...

Greatest hits compilations are appalling inclusions on a best "album" list. And they wonder why the music industry seems to be in a decline?! Maybe people can start listing their top 15 iTunes downloads...

1 Elvis Costello - Get Happy (1980)
2 Jellyfish - Bellybutton (1990)
3 The Beatles - White Album (1968)
4 The Zombies - Odyssey and Oracle (1968)
5 Marvin Gaye - What's Going On (1970)
6 ELO - Eldorado (1974)
7 Weezer - Pinkerton (1996)
8 Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (2002)
9 Michael Penn - Resigned (1997)
10 Rufus Wainwright - Rufus Wainwright (1998)
11 Diverse - One AM (2003)
12 Elliott Smith - XO (1998)
13 Todd Rundgren - Something/Anything (1972)
14 Rod Stewart - Never a Dull Moment (1972)

Sorry, that was just the top 15 from yesterday.

So today's list is...

Cheers,

bdp

P.S. I mean, does anyone really expect to be able to push aside the hoardes of great music that's enriched our lives (thanks, Bill) and make a list of just 15 contenders? What about all the ones I left out? What happens to them?

P.P.S. I hate these lists.

I think it's really interesting to see what combinations of records people list.

For example: I totally agree with you re: Hank Sr. but totally disagree re: Primus.

Which is fine, and why there are so many recordings.

The other point is to find stuff to listen to that I haven't listened to yet.

So far, one way people can be categorized (as far as I'm concerned) is "Zappa is God", "Zappa is vaguely interesting" and "Harder to play doesn't always = better to listen to". OK, that was three ways.
