Here for the gear

I'm on a REAL tight budget over here...

M-Audio FastTrack Pro (god I hate the drivers for this box)
Art Tube MP Studio
Shure SM57
Shure SM58
Yamaha M-80 Power Amp
Yamaha C-80 Pre-Amp
M-Audio Keystation 49e
iMac G5 2.1ghz w/2.5GB RAM, 320GB internal HD, 250 ext FW, 320 ext USB
Logic Pro Studio
ezDrummer (+most addons)
Oddity
MTron
B4 II
Dean Baby V electric guitar
Dean EVO acoustic
unknown handmade "goth country" hollow body electric
Washburn P-Bass copy
LabSeries L3 60w guitar amp.

Most expensive item was the Mac at around $1200 (not counting the upgrades). The cheapest was the SM57, and the Yamaha pre/power amps since they were all three given to me in used (but well working) condition. My mixes sound pretty good, but still don't hold a candle to a real studio. However, I have impressed a lot of pro guys with what I've pulled off on this hardware. Can't wait to get a better interface. This FastTrack is pissing me off. The drivers mess up ALL the time, and I have to go and reset CoreAudio at LEAST once a session.

I do!

I actually just got started and my whole studio was worth under 10k including construction!! I live in Honduras and construction work is worth real cheap here. I spent around 6k in gear and 4k building a small control room with a recording booth inside. We built a 4 parallel concrete wall room and inside the room we built sheetrock walls with green glue and the inside with fiberglass insulation in between the sheetrock and concrete, same with the cieling.

Gear:

Mac Mini Core 2 Duo 2.0 GHz, 2MB RAM, 120GB HD - $855

API 6 slot Lunchbox - 425

Great River NV500 - 750

Rode K2 - 500

Sennheiser e906 - 120

Firewire 1814 with BLA Mod - around 800 I believe

Adam A7s - 1k

Tascam US-2400 - 720 (ebay)

Built my own mic cables with Canare Quad and Neutrik tips - around 250

Now I feel the need to upgrade so that I can record a drum set so I'm filling up my lunchbox with these:

Avedis MA5
SH Mono GAMA
BAE 312
PA Biz Mk

this is going around 3k. Any suggestions on whether or not I'm spending these 3k correctly? The thing I don't like about it is the fact that I will have to go in to the 1814 through the unbalanced analog inputs

I got half off list on all the JBL, AKG, and DBX stuff through my dad. I got the Anvil Rack, the Crown PZM, The Quik Lok stands, and a bunch of cables and stuff for free from the old man. He had a pair of 1176s he was gonna let me grab for next to nothing when the business he was working for at the time went under, but some slut got to them before we did. He also found me a pair of 57's the 58, sm7, and the sm 81's for 200 buck's from some other business that went down after 9/11. Cant complain about 1200 bucks worth of mic's for 200. My Dad rocks.

I payed retail for everything else new and I think I dumped almost exactly 10 large when all was said and done. Its hard to rember exactly since i picked everything up between a 3 year span and cycled a few pieces in and out including the Computer and interface over the years.

I don't have a lot over that, and if you subtracted the bass trappage (which isn't equipment per se), then it probably would come out around that mark.

1. Mackie HR824mkIIs
2. A quad core computer and a couple monitors
3. An API lunchbox with GR and P-1 pre-amps (the two pre-amps were bought used.)
4. Pearlman TM-1 mic (American tube)
5. A Les Paul Std, which I bought about 10 years ago
6. An American Strat which I bought used
7. An American Jazz which I bought used
8. A small Yamaha accoustic
9. Waves Platinum/SSL plugs, plus a couple URS EQs.
10. Presonus Central Station monitor/headphones management

That all probably only comes out to about $13K I guess. If you throw in all the trappage and the Middle Atlantic desk, it probably is more like $18K.

I sold my home theater to finance the studio, plus pretty much anything else in the house that wasn't tied down, and some things I untied first so that they wouldn't be tied down. The home theater I bought back in the Silicon Valley Days of the Bubble, when money grew on trees. Wish I'd decided to do the studio back then, since I'd have a really good now now.

Like, yeah, do you mean $10,000 worth of cables or just the Manleys?
Like somebody said a long time ago, if you can't get an "attractive" sound with a Tascam 2-trk casette and xxx mics, don't bother buying anything else - harsh but often true.

I just did an very detailed inventory for an insurance policy rider last week. I won't bore you with the whole list.

I thought I had about $12k worth of gear. When I added up every piece of gear, software, cables, etc. I almost fell off my chair.

$48K!

That's in just 4 years of buying stuff here and there for my little home studio

Sadly, at least for this forum, my guitar rig is worth twice my recording rig!

The guitar rig totals a little under 10k.

Once when driving to a friend's studio, I had the scary GAS epiphany that the gear inside my car was worth twice the value of the car.

the two albums in my sig we're produced with under $10k in gear.

instruments may have cost more, but not the recording equipment.

evan lanois is quoted (somewhat sadly) saying "people can make a pretty good album these days in a closet with a computer"

so I congrats to the under $10k club, I wish I had that kind of restraint!

I had the epiphany that a new car costs upward of $5k/year in payments. That's a LOT of gear. Now I have 155k+ miles on my car, and haven't made a payment in years. I'm DREADING the day I finally need to replace it... paying hundreds of dollars a month for the privilege of driving something I'll surely like less is not my idea of a good time.

Let's see here...
Between my 2 friends and I we've got quite a bit of gear (for people that do nothing but record ourselves with it!) but still for sure below the 10k mark.

2x Presonus Firepod ~750$
1x Presonus TubePre - 60$
1x Presonus HP4 - 75$
1x Shure PGDMK4 - 200$
1x AKG C3000B - 145$
1x Apex snare mic - 125$
1x Apex kick mic - 145$
2x Rodes NT5 - 480$
2x AT3525 - 280$
1x AT2020 - 110$
2x SM57 - 200$
1x pair of KRK RP-5 - 250$
1x pair of M-Audio Dx-4 - 125$
1x pair of M-Audio SP-5B - 125$
Wires, stands, etc ~ 400$

~3.5K$

For what we've got I consistently blow myself away when we record anything.

Next is to get an RNC, an RNLA and I'm toying with the idea of fabricating 4 channels of SC-1 in a 1U rack space.
