i mean, obviously, I know I'm running trash, but it seems like you guys all have $100k studios setup. I wanna see where my real budget guys are, what kinda setups they have.

Also: any recomendations on where to start next would be great, I eventually would like to build this into a respectable studio.

Sounds good and I bet your well creative with it as well. When I had just a 4 track a couple mics and a boss compressor some of the stuff sounded so cool and still does. Especially drums. Less is more. The wonderful days of bouncing.
Your write there is a lot of snobbery about, what you have to have to make a record. But yes I have now over time amassed a very valuable studio. But it all gets used. But a studio be it personal or comercial if your making records out of it there is a few core expensive things that are a must.

quad-capture audio interface
sm7b (comin in the mail and hope to use it for all vocals)
Sennheiser mk4 (comin in the mail and may return it after playing with it)
FL Studio
M-Audio Studiophile AV40 Monitors
Gaming computer in closet with fans set to low by my desk may buy quieter heatsink already have a quieter power supply
big flat screen tv for monitor

Mics I used to have:
SM57 (muddy honky bassy mic with a pop filter attached not that bad)
SM58 (muddy honky bassy mic)
ND767a (too plosive but exciting EQ nasal off axis so sucks if you plan to commentate with it)
RE320 (lame mic)
RE20 (miss it a little bit)
RE27 (fail mic cant believe i even considered it)
At2020 (too tinny)
AT2035 (barely remember it but my room sucked for condensers back then)

i used to think i was over spending when i bought the 199 brand new condition re320. I dont know how i started juggling 500 dollar mics but price def doesnt mean anything for a lot of these mics.

i actually recorded one of hawaii's top albums of 2011 with a aphex 207d, presonus studiolive, and a studio projects C1. only had to track vocals and guitar because i produced all the music myself. after tracking the vocals, i moved to vegas. i sold all my gear and kept my backup interface (mackie onyx satellite), my computer, and bought a pair of rokit 8 g2's. i mixed the entire project on this rig. we sold over 20,000 copies of the album lol. just goes to show that you don't need tons of expensive gear to make good music. for the record, hawaii's music industry is a little different, we have 4 radio stations in market 64 dedicated to playing local hawaiian / reggae music. pair that will the million people on oahu alone and you can make a decent living.

for the record, the studio that i'm building now that i'm back on oahu is based on a UA apollo and will have some nice gear.

You really can't even get replacement/insurance value for our gear .. it's way too old school.

I've always enjoyed the participatory nature of music-making in Hawai'i. It's not just something to listen to--it's something to do. And the radio stations are really something. I drove around Moloka'i for days just trying to understand the pidgin radio station. Every time I thought I had it--I didn't. And whoever the guy is that does play-by-play for the Canefires sounds like another Ernie Harwell. One of the best baseball announcers I ever heard. The stations don't sound like generic music or talk stations--they're exquisitely local.

I've done loads on much less than $10k, the quality of what you can get for little money is brilliant.

Unfortunately nowadays the guitars and synths alone in my place are well over $10k... I stopped counting the cost of the rest on purpose :-P

I buy all my stuff used or at a discount, so I am well under at $8200 used. New all this stuff would cost about $15000. I also just sold some km184's and a neve portico pre which helped. I have to say though at a third of the price my line audio cm3's and bla ba12's hold there own to the above. Next on my list is some better monitors a ribbon mic and a cheap neve pre.

apogee ensemble $1400
macbook pro $1000
m-audio 2626 $400
apogee one $200
2 bla ba12 preamps $500
desk $150
diy bass traps and sound treatment $250
sonnox plug in eq/comp/limiter $400
other plugs $300
gr3 $200
reason 4 $250
midi keyboard $50
ev 20/20 monitors $200
3 glyph hard drives $350
cables $300
pt9 $350
neumann tlm49 $1000
2 line audio cm3 $300
2 heil pr28 $260
1 pr48 $150
sm57 undyne III free
beta 57 $100
audix om5 $100

Recording studio total= $8200 used

I cant count my guitars, pedals and amps then It would be in the 20k area.

yeah, its pretty awesome. and the personalities are local people who you see at the store or out and about. the PD for one of the top radio stations out here (KDNN 98.5) just sent me a facebook message asking me for my new single. how many PD's are personally asking LOCAL artists for their new music? not many if any. i love being from here and being able to make a living of our music is the icing on the cake.

B-Stock DM-3200 Tascam from M123 about 5 years ago - $1000
Bought PT Core for $50 on ebay and used it to do HD Native trade - $1200
Used Digidesign 192 for above (run DM-3200 TDIF into it also does PT control) $650
Mojave MA-200 Pair (both used - one was $500 - needed $30 cable the other was $650)
Mojave MA-201 used - $450
Komplete 6 $150 then $250 to upgrade to K8 total $350
NI Abbey Road 70s and Modern using voucher from above - $150
Universal Audio 610 (original) bought new in 03 -$900
CME Control Surface (used) - $100
Toshiba 32" display - $300
Mac Pro used - $800
Hard Drives - $200
Tannoy 66D Monitors - used bogo on close out - $650
akg headphones and vrm box - $200

Total $7650

I have some plugs and I make my own cables, but IMHO I did smart shopping and only bought exactly what I needed after doing a lot of research. I'm doing pretty well with this setup. I mainly record guitar tracks and jingles at home as well as my bread and butter which is music for television (my full time gig).

I don't record bands (gave that up a long time ago) and once in a while do some singer/songwriter stuff or something for fun if I really like the artist. Very happy with everything I have.

Ask and ye shall!

Joelpatterson.us - Hit the Ground - Erin Carter - Tindeck MP3 Download

This production pre-dated the start of this thread by about two years, but as I recall, it was the current version of Digital Performer, and the girl was singing on a CAD 350, maybe...? Cannot possibly have busted four figures for this...

I'm tracking through an Eleven Rack.

Even that Peluso 22 251 up front and my Trident 4T rack don't get me close to $10K. I suppose my old Roland keyboard and that Ensonic MR Rack synth are worth something, but still.......

Mixing with stock Digi plugs. Hmmmmmm........those Ultrasone 900's are worth a bit and there's that old set of Event 6" monitors. Still.....I'm way under.

A clip?

Sure......just did finish this one up.

Here's a clip of when I was under $10k. I can't specific, but it was a Tascam 38, Tascam 208 mixer, a Scholz Distortion Generator (which I still have), my old '79 Ric 4001 bass, a Roland TR505 drum machine, and other stuff I can't remember.

This was recorded a looong time ago, sometime in the '80s?.

Falling

and a much more recent clip for comparison -

Running

I guess my song names haven't changed that much in all that time

Just a note:

What most of you guys think your gear is worth and what it is actually worth are two very different things.

I had a mental picture of what my studio was worth, yet after a recent ebay studio clear out I have re-adjusted my valuations..

What your gear is "worth" is not necessarily what you paid for it when you got it

Some of my stuff is vintage 1990's. Doesn't that make it worth even more?

I believe there was the implicit meaning of the question that studio worth was equal to what you paid for it. Granted, there are other methods of calculating 'studio worth' as you suggest.

Since 'vintage' stuff became so hot, I suppose my home studio in 2000 was probably worth at least 50k because the instruments alone consisted of a Jupiter 6, Prophet 5, OB-Xa, Mono/Poly, 606, Drumtraks and so on. Back when the P5 set me back 900, the M/P only 400 etc....

No. I added $10K in gear just in the last 3 weeks. Pacifica, Distressor EL8X, Schoeps stuff, new bass rig. ($6K paid, great buying market)
