I'm well under 10k. I can't remember exactly how much I've spent over the years, but here's a list of what I got:

MacBook Pro (2008 model)
Gelelec 8020B monitors
UAD 2 Solo/Laptop (with about £500-£1000 worth of plugins)
Presonus Firestudio Project (soon to be 2 of them, hopefully)
TC Electronic M One
Hopefully a patchbay will be coming my way soon
Logic Pro 8
Pro Tools 9 (crossgrade from PT LE 8)

That's about all I can think of for now. I'll definitely add more over the years to come though heh

iMac... $1600
Duet 2.... $600
AT4050/SM57....$700
Avalon 737s... $2000 (I have 2 but one was a gift)
DP7...$600
REASON... $500
Waves.... $1400
Epiphone.... $600
Martin....$1000

One of the best threads ever, now i have to say $10k dollars is very much achievable to have high quality set up if you shop on ebay ONLY though lol. Mine whilst in the uk will still come in a bit over the $10k. So here is the deal all in gbp

zed r16 1100 inc flightcase
ns10m 50 they were faulty but still worked lol
alesis adat m20 250 nostalgia reasons
iz Radar 24 1500
Nyquist 8 channels board 1000
tascam da38 x2 50 faulty now tho
mics 150
2 track 1500 qtr inch tape (Teac) free given by neighbour
ipad 399
amp 100
i7 hackintosh self build 600
acoustic panels 535
tascam da20 dat 15
roland kr4500 25 deal of the year
looms 200
otari mtr 90 1600 yep tape at its best
headphones 100
Protools 9 190
logic 130
Motif 6 500
racks flightcase 250
monitor x2 10
Spectrasonics bundle 600

total £9469

Secondhand is key, also i didn't see the point getting multiple preamps when the ones on the zed r16 are good enough.

The key is to identify one of every major requirement then as you grow you can add more and more, i have no compressors, i use the daw plugins for that. Most of my effect plugins are stock ones or freeware. I dont have all the required inputs form the zed r16 but i have a nice patchbay system so i swap around as often as required.

S/H Soundcraft B100. 8 channel broadcast mixer - $450
TK Audio BC1 - $1250
S/H TK Audio DP-1 $1000
Buzz ARC 1.1 $4000
S/H Amek 9098 RNCL $1500
S/H PodPro $150

Cables $200
Some mics $500

A couple of guitars $1000

And then there's the computer but its not geared completly for music so I'm not adding that

So, the idea is to have a great way (Buzz & TK DP-1) in to the 1's and 0's and then either stay there or sum it up through the Souncraft and BC-1/9098.

Ok,

Half computer (other uses) - $600
Additional Monitor ($250)
Self-made Studio Desk ($350)
Acoustic Treatments - OC703, fabric, wood frames, etc ($400)

Preamps ($1000)
Compressors ($250)
Power Conditioner ($100)
Rane Splitter/Mixer ($75)
Interface ($300)
Monitors ($330)
Mics ($1100)
Additional speaker ($340)
Cables/stands ($500)
Midi controller ($100)

Puts me close to $6K with about a third of that contributing to computer/desk/room treatment. For my basic set up it's all I really need. Wouldn't mind some more mics/preamps, but that won't stop ever. I have done pretty well buying used (most stuff at 50-60% the cost). It is hard to not buy new though because when you want something, you want it NOW! But waiting for the right used piece to come along is pretty satisfying when it works out.

I guess if you include my 2 drum kits, 4 guitars, bass guitar and various other odds and ends, I am well above $10K. I don't think that stuff counts unless you have those pieces for the sole purpose of your recording in your studio. If you have them because you play them and enjoy them, then recording with them is just a side-benefit.

Good thread. That number is actually higher than I thought it would be.....can't imagine how some on here feel after adding it up.

I'm positive you can make A+ records with way less than $10k worth of gear - it's all in knowing what to do with it. My Bloody Valentine's Loveless album was mostly recorded in crap basement studios.

All my external stuff lives in a 6U rack that fits in the trunk of my car:

dbx 576 channel strip (I know) $300 used
dbx 160A compressor - $200 used
FMR Audio RNP - $425 new
FMR Audio RNLA - $225 new
TC Electronics M350 fx unit - <$200 new

Mics:
2 x SM57s - $95 each new
1 x SM58 - $95 new
1 x MD421 - $250 used
1 x Royer 101 - $800 new
1 x Rode NT1A - $200 used

Other:
Sansamp DI - $200 new
Alesis SR16 drum machine - $100 used
Various drum samples - free online

I record through a Profire 610 into a MacBook Pro. My next upgrades will probably be a Black Lion-modded Profire 2626 and a faster computer with more/fancier plugins.

When I need to track drums I usually hire out a decent $30/hr studio for a day or two.

FYI I do cheat sometimes by renting top-of-the-line gear from a place in Austin called Rock N Roll Rentals - they have all kinds of tasty outboard including the Neve Portico series and pretty much every useful microphone in the world. When I need to mix I rent a pair of Adam Ax7s from there.

Ah, but even crap basement studios tend to have something in the neighborhood of $10k worth of equipment, minimum, and equipment is what this thread was asking about. It's all the little things that add up, ya gotta watch those, but even your gear adds up to a lot more than you think.

In your list, for example, the stuff you enumerated adds up to $3090. Then there's the Profire and Macbook Pro you use, which count but for some reason you didn't put a price on; those cost about $3,000 new. Now you're at $6,000, just like that.

You didn't mention monitors, but I'm assuming you use monitors. $500? $2000? Headphones? $100-300? $6600 low side, $8300 high side.

And I'm assuming you use a daw, and have bought at least a few plugins over the years? That's easily another $500 if you're using Reason, maybe closer to $1-2k if you use (e.g.) Logic and you add every single little thing up you've ever bought. $7,100 low side, $10,300 high side.

Then there's cables, those add up too, and fast. I'd bet if you tallied all the interconnects & adapters you have in your space you're looking at another $500, at the least. $7,600-$10,800.

And your rack.

Mic stands.

Any furniture, desk and chair etc.

Even in your modest setup, I'm thinking you're very close to the $10k mark without breaking a sweat, possibly more. Most people who have more than an ITB rig and one mic passed the $10k line long ago without realizing it, and even the super-bare-bones guys are generally halfway there.

This **** adds up!

That depends... In recording-gear? Yup.

Apogee Duet
Sennheiser e906
MXL V67G
A set of old headphones for tracking
A couple of cables

Use my stereo to mix for now, as that's what I'm used to listening thru anyways...

The problems start if I'm to add all the stuff I've bought without recording in mind. Rack-stuff I've used with guitars and organs, the organs, all the stringed instruments, amps, effects etc. If you add that stuff I'm probably way above the 10k-limit.

I am way under 10k. But I feel like I can do good work with what I have. It is also very hard to buy lots of gear (even though it saddens me that I can't) when, until recently, I've only been making about 15 grand a year.

That means my yearly gear budget is usually around $500, thus I have to be very meticulous in what I get.
