Hmm:

-32 Ch Midas Venice bought from a guy in Florida with 4 busted Channels: $1200.

-Otari MX5050 8 Trk (with replacement pinch) $485.

-Adam A7: $1300. ( these could have been a mistake as I have this issue: Adam A7 rattling/buzzing)

-Mic total: $3.5K (I really would like another MD 421!)

-Rack: $4000. + or - a hundred or so including cables. I have a couple of hand-built pieces like my LA-2A which I got off a friend for the cost of the parts. I used the street market value in my math. Oh, I soldiered my own cables.

-Ampex 440C $500. recapped and ready to go. for the first month. Needs a tech session, nothing major.

TOTAL: $10,985

Got close. Band pays for the tape!

I guess you were not including any noise making gear right? Does the OP really do everything sound with Korg keys?

Kinda depends on what you mean by "equipment".

If you mean recording gear? Probably right in there, if you are counting what I actually paid (buying a lot used-not retail).

But, that would be excluding my minty C3/122...Yamaha U3...rack of digital keys and thousands in sample instruments...wall of guitars...wall of amps...basses...

I posted over at Studio Forums looking for people's ratios between recording gear and instruments. I easily have 2-3 times the money in instruments...and I've always maintained that is a huge factor in the quality of my sonics. I read so many people looking for this or that uber A/D converter...and in the next breath what amp modeling software to use with their Mexi Strat. Someone over there also asked me for one of my raw vocals I did with the Sm7b...and after listening said "mine doesn't sound like that-you've got such a nice tone"...the "mine" there isn't the mic, which are very consistent unit to unit-this I KNOW. He realized that. It was very flattering, but the reason I bring it up--source is king.

I mean, I have almost $8k in amps. Yikes. That scary to say...but, between my Reinhardt, VVT, custom EL84 combo, and my pedal board...and the old 59 Bassman RI...diminished returns, sure. But, that's where I spend my money. I can sit down at the U3 and just noodle...and get a nice internal smile...

All recording gear does really is reproduce...the better stuff reproduces better...translates perceived reality to speakers (which doesn't mean accuracy all the time)...if you don't have the magic there in the room, under your fingers, you're going uphill to try to make it sound good.

I have 4 guitars....all inexpensive ones....but all nice. A couple of MIDI keyboards a couple of decent mics. A pair of Event monitors.....sennheiser headphones.....and a laptop with **** loads of software.

The total can't be more than two or three thousand bucks.

I'm pretty happy with my sound right now too. G. Loyd Pillsbury | Gaylord, MI | Country / Cross Over / Pop | Music, Lyrics, Songs, and Videos | ReverbNation

I don't fall under this $10K limit, but I do think it's an excellent question. My modest studio competes daily with studios that are worth 100 times or more than my investment. If you look at this as a model of future professional studios, there is a small hint of the future of recording studios.

This is just a small hint at that.

Me, as lost my old studio and had to sell some gear to ease financial trouble so all comes under £3000/$4800

Still rebuilding very slowly as on very limited funds (cant do anything/work/walk etc)

Also: any recomendations on where to start next would be great, I eventually would like to build this into a respectable studio.

I'm trying to stay under $10k (for recording gear) because I hope to be working in recording studios in the future, and do not want a large home setup, for obvious reasons.

Instruments:
Pearl Sessions; bass, 5 toms and snare - $2500
2 other snares I built - spent $600 for both
Cymbals - $2000
Hardware - $1000
Seagull mini-jumbo guitar - $650
Squier Strat - $350

Instruments alone: $7100

Recording:
Motu 24i/0 - paid $1000 (all CAD)
Tascam M2600 - paid $500
Cables - $300
Edirol MA15 micro monitors: $180
Sennheiser HD280 pros: $115
Rode NT2A - $250
3 SM57's - $300
AKG D112 - $150
Zoom H4n - $350
Custom built DAW - $650
Pro Tools 9 - $330

$4125

I want to sell the console and cables for $700
and buy the following to make me happy for a while:
Dynaudio BM6a MKI $1000
Pair of SM81's - $400
Pair of C414's - $1000
2 MD421's - $500
2 MD441's - $800
EV RE320 - $300
Some sort of ribbon, don't know which yet.
API 500 Rack - ~$700
6 Classic API VP26's - $1500
2 Classic API VP312's - $500

Making my future grand total for recording gear $10,125

And then I would want a few more pres, another 500 rack filled with more pres, some compressors and EQs... that's all

My personal studio is actually laughable these days because I sold off practically everything when I started doing studio work. Selling gear for down payments on a house and having kids didn't help much. Right now this is everything I have for me:

Prophet 5
Juno 106
Charvel USA So-Cal
Korg Monotron, hey it was cheap and my kids love it
Focusrite Saffire 6 USB
Samsung power amp
Some ridiculous Infinity bookshelf speakers
Old computer from about 2007
Copy of Cubase from 2005
Some guitar pedals, nothing fancy, mostly EH or MXR
Maybe 2500 bucks in software/plugins
Maybe 300 bucks in Mogami cabling

Hell, I've got half that much in acoustic treatment, and the other half in monitors and monitor control.

Not nearly as sexy as the racks, but infinitely more useful!

What kind of studio's?
Computer? Rooms? Pre's? Mics?
What kind of studios are you taking about?
Studios that don't compose or mix for a label or take in a few hundreds.
Or just a plain home studio to that is more for a fun hobby?

10k worth of gear is ALOT, if its very carefully chosen by
somebody who really knows what they're buying and how to use it.

If you're mainly mixing and tracking only vocals and guitars, with no
need to track live drums or entire bands at once, then 10k will get you
very respectable pre's, adda, mics, and monitors. DIY room treatment can take you even further.

Never underestimate the low budgers...

I'm approaching 20k$ nowadays... Last time I wrote to this thread I was well under 10k$, even under 5k$. I have most of the essentials already, but quality compression, good mics and synths I'm still lacking bad. I'm also contemplating on starting modular synth building, so there's yet another money pit in the making.

Word of warning to you all. If you are currently under 10k$ and surf this site regularly, chances are you go the road I have taken. Not that bad a route, but it sure keeps your wallet slim. heh
