there are a few,

Voice over, where the sennheiser MKH416 is king, one of the reasons is that as a shotgun, its focuses the voice while minimizing the room sound. But some don't like it, I have one and use it for VO quite a lot.

Drums, Ive often had a shotgun up high pointing at the snare, giving me a distant snare sound while minimizing cymbals and others.

I have also had great results with the 416 on small acoustic instruments such as mandolin, fiddle, bouzouki (the Greek one), and finger pickin guitar.

In theatre they can be useful to pick up the performers on stage. I use a pair of them mounted on the floor aiming at the performers to catch them when they move up stage. Downstage I use Crown PCC 160's. The shotguns are wide shotguns, 60 degree.

This is just for sound reinforcement--not recording.
