+6 is just a useless number unless you follow it with a ref. like 185nWb ie. +6/185...ok, then you need to say what speed ie. 15ips?? 30??ips..blah..blahhh

Do you own an MRL???

hear me now and believe me later: EXPERIMENT

you'll find something you like, and it probably won't be what anybody suggests. the individual machine, the tape formula and your ears form a unique partnership. there will be a sweet spot that brings a smile to your face.

find it.

He is so right about experimenting.

Bias is a RECOMMENDED setting only. Like operating level, or cream in your coffee - everyone should find what works best for them.

If you overbias MORE, you get more level to slam your tape hard, but you lose highs.

If you bias less, that 0 VU ceiling gets harder and distorts easier, but you also get a sparklier top end, a nice airy sound. So - use it how you need it to be.
