I second the mxl990. I just picked mine up about two months ago, and it immediately replaced my akgc2000b. Great for the money!

If you want a good mic for distorted guitars, pick up an sm57! Sounds great with the right placement! good luck! They also work good as oh's and as a hi-hat mic. They are the "industry standard" for snare. Maybe not officialy, but almost everone uses them for snare, even large studios. Just buy 10 57's at $89 a piece and your set. HAHA!

I have found the AT804 to be a cool mic for clean guitar stuff. The OMNI pattern eliminates proximity effect and can be used quite close, and the high end tapers off just right to keep the tizzy sound away.

MC012's, yes...forgot those! On acoustic guitar they smoke. I am assuming at this point you gotta find used ones on eBay since the new ones are made in China? Don't know if they sound the same.

There was a thread on this somewhere; Google if interested.

My recollection is that some ex-employee got one of the asian companies to manufacture look-alikes, but AKAIK the russian version is still produced.

FYI- Apparently, the ones with the -10dB pads and the steel mounts are the original russian versions. The ones w/o pads and with rubber/plastic mounts are the asian knockoffs.

I also own the joe meek jm47, and I hate it! Does your xlr connector go in all the way until it clicks? because mine doesn't! I hate the sound of it, and it just feels cheap and dinky. I had written a review when I got mine a while ago, but after testing it more, I dislike it more.

SM57 - Say no more.
MC012 - What a steal. I'm glad I have a bunch with the 10db pads.
NT1000 - This mic is so good on elec gtr paired with a 57.
The only problem is that's about all they're good for.
MD431 - I'm not even saying why this mic is so great.
KSM32 - Not really dirt cheap, but so overlooked by so many. This mic works perfect on some voices, also great on toms.
SM58 - There are certain singers who just sound great on a SM58, don't ask me why.
PZM - a PZM right next to the drums squashed to hell.
No other mic does quite the same thing.

I also agree about the old EV mics. Very useful.

my gt44 are my overhead mics i like them cuz they are very soft in the high frequencies, not harsh at all

and for some voices the late great, always ubiquitous
and infamous studio projects c1

it was so great i traded my vintage U47 for one,
then i saw them for 199.99 @ banjo center

Hang on. Are you saying that the SMs 57 and 8 are better than any mic made by Audio-Technica, Beyer, Sennheiser, Electro-Voice, the SM-7 or the C414s? Most of which (with some notable exceptions) can be had for way under €1,000.

Because, if you are I think you'll find there are plenty of people here who'll disagree. Including me tutt

Anyway. My favourite inferior mics are

Beyer M99 and M201 (in production), plus M101 and M400 (discontinued)
Sennheiser MD421
Electro-Voice 635A
Audio-Technica ATM25

I'm not sure there are any "good" condensers for that price ($150), but the mc-012 is about as good as they come.

Dynamics, there are tons!

Nady/ppa/t-bone ribbons - pretty damn good as stereo drum room

Beyer M201 - snare, toms, elec. guitar, acoustic guitar (yes!)
Revox 3500 - same, but brighter.
EV nd468 (408,408a) - snare, toms, horns
Beyer M88 - Vox, electric guitar, kick, bass, toms, horns
Beyer M99 - Vox, kick, floor tom, bass
Shure Sm7 - Vox, elec. guitar

Maybe those last three are a stretch for the price.

etc.
