I loved 'A Capella.'

Girlfriend bought it for me years ago. I broke her heart, she broke anything that had to do with us.

Honk for Todd - Beeeeep beeeeep!

favourite TR tracks

1) Marlene (off Something/Anything). nice percussion arrangement and vocal harmonies. great chords too, IMO.

2)Love of The Common Man (off of Faithful). cool tone in the guitar solos...

3)Ballad of Denny and Jean - shows the gentler side of his production touch. (off of Ballad of Todd Rundgren). Nice talk-box solo too (it was 1971 so he's allowed :-))

there's so many more!

1) Just One Victory (call me a sucker)
2) Utopia from the same named album (sucker for any Moog sequencer)
Kevin Ellman too....GREAT drummer.
3) Last Thing You Said from the Runt album.

Regarding Todd as moderator. I'm SURE Todd has at least one website he could be contacted through.
A recording talking point?.........
How does he get that clangy snare sound, no matter what drummer he's recording?

Todd was interviewed in a recent issue of Sound on Sound magazine. He talked about many aspects of engineering, production, and musicianship. All very interesting....I mean, someone with his undoubted skill and experience saying that - heaven forbid - mic placement is the key, NOT the console or vintage hardware!

It was also refreshing to hear him talk about the digital revolution ... Todd does not appear to be anal about sound reproduction - whatever works, WORKS.

PLEASE consider being a guest moderator Todd! We're not such a bad bunch you know!

Just chiming back in to say that the "Liars" CD is amazing. It hasn't left my player in 4 weeks. Thank you Todd for continuing to inspire.

If you're a MusicMatch On Demand Subscriber, you can stream it, but it's apparently not available for sale, oddly enough.

I'm listening to it now (it's listed as off the Utopia "Last of the New Wave Riders" album). It's a live version. Possibly/probably not the one you're looking for.

i was probably 3, 4, or 5 years old when "hello it's me"
was on the radio alot and it went in deep....
i love that song and i love
"can we still be friends".....

"skylarking" is a masterpiece, especially the first
three or four tracks....
i read something andy partridge wrote a couple
of years ago about sequencing the running
order of the record with splices on the
original 2" multitrack in the same manner
as stories about marvin gaye's "what's going on" -
overdubs leaking from song
to song....

What do you mean? I haven't heard that (about the Marvin Gaye stuff). Please elaborate.

i have read that marvin's 8 -track tapes of basics were cut together
and that they were sequenced as one or two pieces of 1 inch
tape before the
overdubs were added

mostly strings and vocal overdubs
i would think......

it helped to form that cohesive
end result......

be well

Interesting. I've always loved Marvin, especially "What's Going On." When I was out in LA a few years back, I actually got to play with a copy of the multi-track masters of "What's Going On," "Mercy, Mercy Me," and one other song that was on the same reel (I don't recall which one it was). I don't remember any of that stuff being glued together by overdubs, but there was some great stuff on there.

By the way, I would TOTALLY be up for having Todd as a guest moderator.

Something / Anything? - utter brilliance.

"A Dream Goes On Forever", ditto.

"Couldn't I Just Tell You" - along with some stuff from the Records and the Raspberries is one of the most perfect pieces of jangle pop ever written.

Do stop by, Mr. Rundgren.

Please. thumbsup

Yes, I have always been a fan. I've really learned a lot about music and recording techniques just by listening to his records, although I don't agree with his or his wife's politics one bit! GET LIARS ASAP! I think it's the best thing since Hermit of Mink Hollow!

Check out one of Todd's early bands The Nazz.
I remember buying the 7" single. A side "Open My Eyes" great little rocker. The B side was the original recording of "Hello It's Me".

Another big fan, mainly the stuff in the 1970s. Personally I find Liars a bit intense, but I'm Australian so maybe I'm missing something.

Anyway, this is my favourite picture (which I had as my screensaver until it got too much for me).
