eBay warning Fraud Pro Audio Item

Fraud seller on ebay. May sell high ticket items in the future.
Seller will send you a box with a bogus part in it.
Then claims that he sent then item.
I ignored the basic warnings in the auction before I even bid.
( My stupidity but I was in a rush)
Anyway I thought I would give fair warning to other potential victims
Seller is in Diamond City / Lead Hill Arkansas area if you want other info please PM me.
I asked the seller to give me the serial number of the microphone (That he claims to have sent me) - he refused.

Neumann M149 Studio Tube Condenser Microphone M 149 - eBay (item 180320744068 end time Jan-25-09 17:15:00 PST)

If you paid via PayPal, dispute it immediately. Don't wait for the seller to "make it right". Time is on his side. You already have all of the information you need. There's no need for any further conversation with him on the subject. Just get your money back and let him come whining to you.

Sorry to hear it. Ebay has implemented a bunch of new procedures but there's still a ton of scumbags out there and it's getting worse with the way the economy is going.
PM sent about recovering your money.

a bolt

In a box that would not even fit a M149 if it was packed properly.
Paypal does not seem to be much help - I have protection with Mastercard at least.
I guess always pay with Mastercard oi Visa it a good lesson to follow as well.
But I should have looked at his selling history that was dead give away.
I broke one of the eBay golden rules.
I just hope nobody else falls victim here.

Deeamm. That's terrible. I feel for you.

What I'd do is in the follow up feedback response, I'd put a link to this thread instead.

I might buy my first item of any significance from ebay in the near future.

Can you give some advice for a first time buyer? What are the golden rules?

Check all the feedback to see a)whether he/she has sold a lot of stuff with positive feedback b) What types of items they've sold, ie if there's only been CDs, clips, etc that's been sold, run away.
Ask questions about the item, if you're not sure about their answer, ask a silly question that any audio pro would know but a scammer would not. Get a weird answer, run away.
If they ask for anything that's not through Paypal, such as Western Union or cheques, run away.

OK, that's really great, thanks, I didn't know ANY of those things.

Why run away if they're only selling little items though?

If they have a long history of selling Beanie Babies and suddenly advertise an SSL, there's a good chance their account has been hijacked.

I feel badly for the OP, but as he says, he didn't follow his own sensible precautions and/or trust his gut. Hope he gets his bread back, otherwise this is a very expensive lesson.

I'm in the process of escalating a claim with PayPal now, but for a $26 set of automotive light bulbs, not a $$$$ microphone. This is the first time I've had a seller drop the ball like this and get weird on me. Very strange times, indeed.
