Neve 1073 or Avalon 737

I am in the dilema of purchasing a Neve 1073 or 737. I have used both exstensively. I like them equally. I want the Neve 1073 for bragging points, however, the Avalon is more practical. What should I do?

the avalon looks cooler und stylisher, but that's all to it.

if i was in your situation i wouldn t even think about it for a moment, because there is just one definitive answer when you look for sound: 1073.

I just sold a 737 to make way to a Daking IV. My first, second and third choice was a 1073 dpd but the budget decided for me.
I wish I could keep my 737 as well but again...$ first.

I can save you, and us, time: here, 80% are Avalon haters and 100% are Neve lovers. Case closed!

I appreciate the comments. I am planning to get the 1073, I was just second guessing myself with 737. Thanks

Just curious; what do you find more practical with the 737? The compressor? I have (and like) both, but the Neve gets the most use around here.

I was just going to point out that I've come across a fairly substantial anti-Avalon backlash in some quarters.

I don't have a pony in that race, though. I'd have to save up for an RNP at this point. heh (Not strictly true but I'm not buying gear for a while.)

But it's fun to watch the device that everybody lusts after and has to have seemingly overnight turn into an object of derision.

And it's fairly interesting to see how local group opinions are reified by hearsay repetition -- just as opposing opinions form in (inverse) parallel in other social groupings (ie, BBs).

One thing I've noticed as I move around... there's a whole lot of bs... and that's what makes it all so fun.

Man, you see? That's the problem. People like me have a 1994 Toyota Corolla; I wanted a Lexus CRV but got an used Corolla...
...the same with gear...

Pupo: guess what, I'm getting the 3124+, not the Daking! Mike at Vintage King made me a very nice price.

As I said I'd have both. But buying an Avalon was kind of a gear goal for me; and I really thought it was more; maybe I was specting some magical dust in my tracks... I don't know. I hope I can get another in the future for the options sake, but that would be after API, 1073 and V76... heh

If the artist is great the 737 will sound great.
If the artist needs some help the neve1073 has more color for those who need it.

You're talking about the A Designs ATTY - but what you REALLY want with a 3124+ is the new ATTY2'D

buddy,

you made a mistake by posting a thread on this. Too many avalon bashing people with the stuck in their head opinion that avalon products suck. Hey, if you can't record a golden track with the VT-737... you need to keep reading on this forum.

You said it yourself the VT-737 is more practical for your applications. Than why are you re-convinced that the 1073 in going to suit your needs better? To brag that you have Neve products in your studio?

Of course the 1073 is an amazing preamp but it's not a comparision of a lexus to an escort when you team it up next to the Avalon Come on! You've got to be stupid to believe that.

they're both imo equally good for different applications.

so....

Good luck on your next purchase... if Fat Neve is going to rip through your speakers be ready for it!

You're taking it personal now. Why is this?
The reason to post here is to get others opinions, you can take them or not. However you shouldn't call stupid a person that doesn't think like you.

Anyways, as I said: "I can save you, and us, time: here, 80% are Avalon haters and 100% are Neve lovers. Case closed!" I was right.

i don't really see it as being overrated. what i mean by this is that many BIG hit records were tracked through avalons, so its history proves its not overrated. whether you like it or not, thats a whole nother argument.

from now on, i plan on doing a quick little trial btw avalon 737 and my new 1073 when i track with a new artist. I'm sure one will work better on some than the other.

I'm a pianist/keboardist. There's an ancient Roland vs Korg discussion. Some guys prefered bright, others fat; who is right?

I know people that like even a thin plain sound over a big round because is more natural.

Yes .personally I do prefer the neves every time .the only time we found the avalons useful is when we ran out of other stuff.

overrated example ..guy goes into guitar center to buy a preamp:
sales goon tells him the shiny new " Avalon stuff on the showroom is the sh*t..
...don't bother with that ugly chandler LTD thing at the bottom of the rack..the Avalon will blow it away ...you know a lot of big r&b /rap artists are using these on hit records every day"
but the Assh*le salesman who's never compared any thing other than the presonus and focuswrong crap theyre told to pimp all day, doesn't realize that a lot of these rapper guys have sold their avalons and bought 1073's..

i don't remotely condsider these units as being bright vs. fat.
One sounds great .
the other less great.
But yeah.. thin and big/round can compliment each other in the mix.
