welcome

mic levels are low compared to line levels, so a pre amp is there to boost them

a compressor is there to compress, or limit, the dynamics ... and is made to see line level signal

source -> mic -> pre -> comp


a pre might also be used to color line level signals, no gain or tiny gain, in a stereo buss

or a pre may boost after a passive summing box, and in this case it could be:

multi outs -> passive summing -> stereo pre -> stereo comp
