eMusic Says Data Supports Long Tail Theory | Epicenter from Wired.com

Chris Anderson is Wired alumni isn't he? I'd rather read about this in something perhaps a bit more impartial. And as it says in the article, eMusic is the long tail, i.e. you have no choice but to plunder its depths if you want to find the gems. Perhaps eMusic's subscription model also makes it more likely listeners will rummage through it, as you'll take more of a risk for cheaper per-track costs.

On the flipside, I'm sure the PRS-MCPS would love for the long tail to disappear, as it obviously would make their job much much easier. I swear they must get pretty fed up doing my accounts... it's barely worth the postage of sending my statement out each quarter.

Well.. you supply them with a job to do, so I wouldn't feel too bad about it. heh
I think, regardless of economic value, measured against a whole, it is a good thing there is diversity. A wider more differentiated base makes for a richer culture. Of course the guy is biassed, but is the other "side" that said, if I remember correctly, that music has to be marketed well, and consumers have to listen to it a lot, before they actually like it and buy it, etc. those are just as biassed.
I think the "super pop" artist will always be around but the internet has allowed for a new "long tail" model to exist the last few years. Logical if you look at how people learn about and choose music now. It sort of resembles a record shop. Lots of trash to wade through, just to find one or two gems.
