Loud peaky voice

Hi guys,

I would like your help because I have a very screamy vocalist here.

He sings at around -20dbu and suddenly he shouts up to -10dbu.

The problem is not only the level, but the change in his timbre too.
at low levels he is boomy but when he shouts......my ears are dying!!!
He keeps telling me "why my voice is thin?"

How would you deal with this?

i want to kill him before he kill my ears!

Dynamic EQ - compresses according to frequency, you could have it duck the high mids more when he gets louder - or make something work this way with side chain compression.

Or recommend a good voice teacher and tell him to come back later... It is an untrained voice! You might suggest he work the mic a bit better too. Turn his head when loud, or something like that.

I'll be working with one similar tomorrow - daughter of a famous rocker who has her own band. She gets kinda harsh on loud notes, sweet on soft and low ones. It's a challenge!

Are these 2 seperate parts ie. chorus/verse?
If so- seperate passes.
If not- change mic and posisioning.

I'd first try to get the singer to
A) understand how he figures into the sound
B) adjust his technique

On my end I'd probably us a couple compressors in series. I'd make the second one that's grabbing the peaky stuff be one of the thicker ones I own.

Try to track him in a different room if possible.
