Acoustics etc

Hi

We have just built a console stand/ soundproof box. The basic idea involves 2 parallell side panels which stick out from the control room wall. Next to the wall, in the lower section (back of the footwell) is a ventilated enclosure containing mac/pc drives etc. Directly on top of that is a cable section for the console which is mounted at the front as you'd expect, with an armrest etc. The cable section is totally covered by a top panel that has the displays etc on it. We made this out of 18mm ply.

Unfortunately, this whole assembly is now acting like a massive bass extension cabinet. It produces an unholy resonant low. It rattles foundations. It has 2 'chambers' the soundproof bit, and the cable section, then the vertical sides which come out all the way to the armrest at the front...making the footwell into a sort of chamber aswell.

Obviously it would have been far better to use mdf or something far 'deader' than the ply, but I am trying to think of ways to tame this. What I want to know is, has anyone had any experience of this sort of thing, and what do you recommend? I dont want to spend ages trying to sort it out, only to find that I need to redo it anyway. So far I have come up with the following ideas....

1. Cut a big hole in each of the front vertical side pieces.
2. Screw and glue 18mm MDF to all of the major sections on the inside.
3. Possibly try to find something heavier like ply with lead bonded to it, and screw that on.

I've tried foam but the freqencies affected are just too low for it.

Thanks very much guys

Jack
