South Florida slutz...

Hey guys, I've been real busy with the recent move, install, set-up, debug, etc. of our studio (PERFECT PITCH STUDIOS - Recording Studio Montreal, QC, Canada) and I need a break. I will be in the Fort Lauderdale (Sunny Isles, to be precise) area next week for a short vacation and tought I'd post this to see anyone would like to meet-up, have a beer, show your studio, etc. This is my 1st time in FL so if anyone has tips about live venues, cool bars, by all means do share!
Also, if anyone needs a hand with some mixes...
Cheers,

i live in downtown miami so i may not be up on all of the good ft lauderdale happenings. you could check out the riverwalk area of ft lauderdale. a good amount of bars, clubs, restaurants, etc are located there. ive had a good time whenever ive been invited up around that way.
for folks visiting that area i always recommend this: if you like hamburgers, you should check out a spot in hollywood called "le tub". gq magazine rated it the number one burger in america and i have to say its serious business. The LeTub.com

as for gear spots out here, i havent hit up any other than gc and sam ash. not much in the area for that kind of thing.
hope this helps a lil

How about some nice studios to visit? heh

i'm in west palm beach but have lived all over south florida. Been to le-tub quite a few times. I like that place, but if this is your first time you can't not go to south beach. Hit lincoln road while your there it's where all the high endy art galleries and restaurants are. If you want to see the big studio here it's "the hit factory - Criteria" In North Miami. Pretty world famous actually. Nope don't work there, I'm a mere agricultural peasant of the audio community. but well known in local circles. In the area where the hit factory is there's like a whole recording studio district of warehouse and nicer studios presumably that catch the hit factory spill off.

While we're on the subject, what are the well-regarded south Florida/Miami area studios? Of course Hit Factory/Criteria, Crescent Moon, and South Beach, but what are some of the other options or new rooms? What does the mid to high end of the market look like? Are there any rock tracking rooms available?

The Dungeon are pretty cool and are one of those "next to" the hit factory studios if i remember right. They have 2 SSLs. A 4000 and the old Johnny carson NBC board. Big tracking room too. Been there a few times, and worked there a tiny bit. Owner's laid back. Dashboard Confessional and quite a few big indies have recorded there.

Don't forget the world reknown "Starfish Studios" lol me naahh I mostly mix and master the home studio and small time commercial set around here. I do end up finding ways to make music for pay with some clients though. It took me like ten years to figure out how to make money playing music, and for me I realized it's arrangement for people I meet for other services. People want to do music with their friends. I'm hardly high end here, but I get a good sound, am friendly, and have been in the scene here over 15 years. At this point I don't even know how people find me I haven't advertised in years. It's like "I heard of you from carlos" me... "whos Carlos" etc

Try checking out 'The Mix' run by a kid named Jason. Check out Vanquish Studios who just put in a Duality(I don't even think the whole thing is up and running yet, still doing construction, just sold them everything in October or November). There's a recent graduate of Full Sail named Jose that we were part of an AWS900 sale along with another guy in Orlando actually closed the deal. He's in the Brichel Avenue area and I don't know if he's up and running yet because he just got his board in December. You want to check out Bieler Brothers, where Matt Laplant is the studio manager, he did all the Nonpoint stuff, Skindred, Stereoside and has even worked with Dashboard Confessional. You have Liquid Ghost Studios in the north Boca area, you have Mercury Studios, run by Adam Wesley and who is VERY close to Bieler Brothers. Lastly, you have Circle House, owned and operated by the 'Inner Circle' guys who did the Cops Theme song. Them along with Hit Factory and South Beach are the best and most popular. If you visit Dungeon, tell Freddie that Julian says whats up.

Hollywood Beach where the broadwalk is, has a lot of different restaurants( Le Tub is a couple blocks west of the beach ) and bars all along the beach. You'll find a lot of your fellow Canadians like to hang in this area. It's a nice beach. It's not as crazy as Ft. Lauderdales beach. I lived there for 16 years before moving a couple years ago. I wouldn't steer you wrong. Have a good time. I'm jealous

P.S.
If you'd want to get more adventurous go down into the Keys about a hour south. Go through Florida City and turn onto Card Sound Road 11 miles to Alabama Jacks. Country Music, Great Seafood ( Jimmy Buffett says they have the best conch fritters in the keys ), Cold Beer. Tell Mike Hi. It's another world down in the keys.

Yikes, not sure I want to find myself in the midst of other Canucks, I'd rather meet locals who can show me their fave hangs rather then the touristy spots.

The Keys? Are things really that different there? Are there any studios on the Isles?
I'm down with exploring that a bit more...

The touristy spots are South Beach and Ft. Lauderdale beach. Hollywood Beach is more like California. The "Canucks" I've known there are definitely not tourists. They live there 6 months out of the year, they call themselves "Snowbirds".

The only major studio I know of in the Keys is Shrimp Boat Sound in Key West. It's Jimmy Buffetts Studio. The Keys are VERY unique. Imagine driving for 2 and 1/2 hours with bridges between the islands. One of the bridges is 7 miles long between Marathon Key and Big Pine Key ( home of the Key Deer, 3 ft high.)

Key West has a very happening artist community. Hemmingway lived there, Tennessee Williams, Audibon, Harry Truman, among many celebrated artists, musicians, writers. The Coral Reefs, snorkling, Glass Bottom Boats, sunset cruises, Deep Sea fishing, swimming with the dolphins.

On any night you could see 50 different acts or more. Barry Cuda's Barrelhouse piano among many others. Go to Hemmingways hangout "Sloppy Joes". They have a website you can watch the stage all day long. Duvall St. at night is a trip. I've played most of the clubs there in my time and always had a ball. They don't call it PartyTown for nothing.

If you like sushi, just a few miles south of Sunny Isles in a small town called Surfside there is a place called Sushi Republic. It is owner operated by a great Japanese sushi chef and his close pal. The sushi is unbelievably fresh and tasty.
Down south near the University of Miami is a brew house called the Titanic that has live acts. The food is good and the beer is made on the premises. Miami is huge and spread out. PM me if you like and I will zap you my cell phone # and if I can offer some assistance I will be happy to do so!!!

For night-life be sure to check out the Seminole Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood. Also South Beach. I'm a fireman on the beach and can tell you that you will not be disappointed.

For studios you can't go wrong with Circle House or Hit Factory-Criteria. Also Studio Center in Miami Lakes.

Have fun bro!

From Canada? Yes, but not real "stars". Chopper from the Lone Star Band was from Montreal. He was one of the big guns on the South Fla club scene for a while. He kept many local musicians working for many years

We did this one gig where there were 300 French Canadians and no one spoke english. They wanted a Country Band and the promoter gave everyone of them a cowboy hat. It turned out to be a fantastic gig.

Have a nice trip to the Keys. I wish I was going too. In Key West you might run into Kenny Chesney, Shania, Jimmy Buffett, They've all been down there recently. Have fun!

Spectrum Recording Studios

One of the best sounding live rooms for drum tracking and one of the best mic collections in town besides the Hit Factory.

Hello Lozion,

I have a session @ Spectrum this Thursday, and I will be playing out Wednesday night @ Smith and Jones on Las Olas in Ft.Lauderdale, and on Thursday night a gig @ Boston's on the beach in DelRay Beach @ A1A (on the beach), and Atlantic Ave.

Don't think it would be cool to come to the session, but if you want to hang with some fellow music people, feel free to call me at 347-351-8079.

Best,
