Ribbons for vocals

How many of you are using Royer R121s for vocals? Is it a viable alternative to the usual U87 etc? What pres?

I used one for all the heavy rock "shouting" parts on a recent project.. (verses got M149) I think I used Neve 1073 on both..

the Royer worked a treat.

I've used them on vox also. Mostly for quiet, slower stuff. Preamps ranged from API, Neve 1073, 1272, BBC 60's. I like them a lot when they work with the song.

Billy Corgan laid some tracks with a RCA 77DX on the Swan album.
BTW I like the his songwriting, vocal and arranging skills!

I've never found the right vocalist for my Royer 121. There's usually at least a half dozen mics I'd prefer. But, admittedly, I don't record much metal or heavy rock "shouting".

Yup. I've been using my 77dx's for vocals. Looooove 'em. With a good pre, they can not by beat. Kind of amazing for a mic that is 50 years old.

You want warmth, you got it. You want crisp highs and lots of air, you grab a different mic.

I have just started playing with a Shure SM-33 for my vocals. I gave a blind listening test to some co-workers. I had an Audix OM-3 into a Mackie VLZ (with reverb) on song one. The same song with different arrangement had the SM-33 into an HV-3.

The OM-3 was mistaken for the ribbon mic. It had a softer, lush sound. Yes everyone was surprised! The SM-33 was a bit brighter and came across much in a clearer way. It was very interesting.

I didn't like my 121 on voice. Sounded slow and had almost no high end. I didn't yell into it but I imagine it would sound like puking.

For the r-121 & r-122,
you can take advantage of the offset ribbon design...

If you sing up-close, into the back side of the mic
[& flip the polarity], you can brighten up the response...
