jaguar (os10.2)

botherin' anyone else that jobs is makin' us 10.xxx buyers pony up another $129/usd (in other words, full price, again!) for 10.2/jaguar, for the inclusion of an extreme oversight in their previous version; AUDIO & MIDI?!?!?! i mean, showier surfing & ms office aside, wasn't the whole point, for us muso's at least, audio & midi (& video!) in a multi-tasking emvironment (finally, catching up to windoze in this regard!). for such an integral part of any os, i kinda feel like i bought a jag (no pun), say v.10.xx, without a steering wheel, and am now being asked to buy a brand new one (say v.10.2), for one with! is it just me, or is anyone else kinda feeling like a guinea pig right about now? sure, maybe this and/or that might be benefitting from a faster engine, but when you get right down to it, a pc's a little faster at doing one thing, & a mac's a bit faster at doin' another; but ain't THE reason we professionals girdling the globe traditionally pay much heftier prices for an apple/mac, software/hardware setup is for it's very stability and reliability in our chosen field? of which the omission (audio & midi) essentially rendered 10.0/10.1x useless? don't we, who at various times in its shaky past, kept apple afloat, deserve at least an upgrade fee (say $20-30 bucks, at most) for paying them to beta test osx? hello!

still, the price tag is a bit obscene considering we buy into apple for the HARDWARE and not the SOFTWARE. it SHOULD be a free upgrade from 10.1, or at $49.99 at most... remember apple is about its hardware.

at this point, i doubt i will upgrade for quite a while. atleast until everyone is in their second revisions of the apps for it.

10.2 is a MASSIVE update. It contains the new Midi Setup Control Panel

It now uses the GCC 3 compiler which should speed up all recompiled apps as well as potentiall drop their CPU utilization.

It has Quartz Extreme which is nice if you have a 32MB AGP card. It offloads Graphic UI processing to the card freeing up processor cycles

Core Audio has updates..just about everything is updated. Apple Engineers really busted their humps on this OS. Even in BETA form users report it's as fast as OS9.

you still might decide to wait depending on your needs but I will assure you 10.2 is a NOTICEABLE difference.

yeah, but the fact remains i bought OSX with my dualGHZ machine and havent even been able to USE it. it should certainly be a free update going from essentially a "non-working" OS to a working one. about all i can do with this OSX is surf the net with explorer.

and the majority of what they include with the new one i have NO use for.

the core audio is only a massive update insofar as 10.1.x has no provision for audio or midi at all. which is my point. it's obscene that any os in this day & age should be without a some decent provision for audio (mac software, especially), therefore it becomes further inane that we should have to pay again for what they blatantly left out the 1st time. it's quite useless to our needs as musos if the most obvious component is missing.

Core Audio

Should be in 10.1. I hear that it wasn't as robust as it should be.

The big benefits of 10.2 are the tweaks to the underlying OS and the new GCC 3 Compiler support. Quartz extreme should free up processor cycles to power for more audio. I do agree it's a little steep. You might want to wait and see how much of an impact it has on audio.

Hmm...I'm running Reason 2.0 (w/MOTU's OSX MIDI driver), SparkXL 2.5, SoundHack, Adobe LiveMotion, Procreate Painter, KPT Effects & Knockout, BBEdit, AppleWorks, & IE5 in OSX. Sure, I can't run Logic or DP yet, but there's lots of work I can do in X today.

I'm still pissed about the upgrade $$, too, though.

Yeah, the audio is still biting on the headphone jack - I'm waiting for audio drivers like everyone else (Metric Halo ones for me). But, I can take my Tibook to the coffeeshop or on a plane and still get stuff done.

AJ, you're soooo subtle heh

Steve Jobs is still pissed off that Bill Gates became Bill Gates instead of Steve Jobs becoming Bill Gates.

Explains a lot, IMO.
