Great mic pre, sounds BIG, lots of color, can be matched to many different types of microphones. Highly recomended.

I played with one that I suppose must have been broken. It did nothing for me on several mics and various sources. Just varied between different styles of bad.

I loaned it to Lynn Fuston and his opinion was the same. If the one I got had a technical problem, then I have no opinon, (though it came directly from the manufacturer for eval).

If it was not broken, I think the Vipre sucks

The one you got must have been broken! When I first got it I wasn't expectig anything all that special... it was from 'Groove Tubes' about to be marketed by my favorite company [alesis].... bleck. At any rate, Apsen cornered me at an AES show and made me promise to check it out...variable impedance my ass... what's this, the new "marketing buzz words bull****" since "toob" is only half as effective as it once was...

So the first time I tried it was on what I like to call the "everything's new" session... where pretty much every piece of gear I used for the gig was gear I'd never used before [including the recorder!!].

The first use of the VIPRE was on the "Front of the kit" mic, which was a Soundelux i-69 [possible Mercenary Edition prototype... cardioid only lg. diaphragm FET condenser]. All I could say was "WOW"!!!!

Between the impedance and more importantly the "rise time" switches... I could hardly believe what I was hearing. Playing around with the "rise time" switch did little or nothing for me when I was dicking with the thing in the shop... but put the unit "into combat", especially on drums... the "rise time" switch may be the coolest feature on and "non-FX" unit I have ever used!!

I got this drum kit to sound like it came from somewhere between "Led Zeppelin II" and "Little Feat" 'Time Loves a Hero'... the drum sound, especially the Front of the kit mic sound was killing me... in a good way!!

Since then it's gone on to do bass, vocals, guitars... miscellaneous percussion [man does the "rise time" work like a mutha****ah on miscellaneous percussion!!!!!]...

I have found it a pretty invaluable tool, that I shall not want to work without when ever possible.

Obviously... your milage varied a little bit.... [sooo, uhhh, other than that Mrs. Lincoln... what did you think of the play?]

The rise time switch also comes in very handy when mixing vocals that have been recorded with too much sibilance, saved me from having to use a de-esser many times. And of course running anything through 8 tubes is not too bad either.

The VIPRE you tested must have been broken, even though it's built like a tank. Looking inside that thing is total gearslutz porn.
I would recomend checking it out again, otherwise you might miss out on a great preamp.

I got this great singer I'll be recording in a few weeks, who I've worked with before. He can sing and scream really well, but the problem is he's notorious for hard sibilance. His esses will rip your face off your skull. He doesn't mean to hurt people, he just sounds that way. I've already been contemplating how I'm going to go about de-essing his ass, without making it dull. Michael, can this thing really help me? I've got a little de-esser somewhere, but its too low quality to use on this. And besides, I would rather record it right to begin with, than screwing with it later in the mix. grudge

The VIPRE definitely can take off some of the sibilance and smooth the transients quite a bit. I would try this chain: Royer R-121 on the vocal - VIPRE with rise time switch on slow, impedance at 300 or 600 - compressor of your choice, preferably with a fast attack time (so no 160VU, a distressor comes to mind) - FATSO with the warmth set to 4 or 5, no compression and keep the input level so the yellow LED just blinks. If that chain doesn't work, tape the holes between the singers teeth heh

The Chinese invented gunpowder thousands of years ago - so they've got a development and product history that more then qualifies them to be able to manufacture something that blows you away - as the Vipre has done so with people who have used it.(The Vipre is DESIGNED and spec'd in the States).

Over here of course, we're suss of anything built anywhere else ('cept the new Jaguar's) - like erm...all those 'great" sounding DAW's?

I personally don't give a **** where it was made, as long as it's relaible and sounds good... that's really all I care about. The tone is awesome, and from what I've seen, the build quality is excellent... end of story for this boy.

i just got a demo of it from Aspen himself. ****ing INCREDIBLE. this mic pre kicks some major ass. my only complaint is that i want TWO of them. the rise time is absolutely wonderful and the impedance switching is very cool [although i think you could get away with half of them but since they offer it ]

so i got a demo of it through a GT something or another [low end condensor of their line] and a SM58... but the reason it perked my interest is when he used the rca 44, the mic LIT UP.... this is a MUST HAVE PRE for ribbon mics. **** man.

so then i get back to wireworld and immediately throw it on the VOX for the surround mix of this band micheal and i did the past two days. viper->distressor... the vox was a TAD sibilant it on the slow rise time, made it gorgeous. i did run the vox thorugh the EMI comp and absolutely loved it [but intended on using the EMI on the overheads instead... CRANKED] you cant just have one EMI comp.

it was just that hearing you and Alpha describe this box makes me realize I need two of them right now, but as you know, I may have to blow my whole buget for new speakers soon. Didn't mean any offence to you or AJ. becoming a gear slut is not without it' growing pains.

Cool. We had tons of fun. I liked the song a lot, are you the singer? No problem with the overheads, alpha compressed the heck out of 'em. Did you have a chance to hear it yet? It's not finished but well on the way.

nah... fibes is the one with that killer guitar tone. i will be heading down there in 2 weeks so hopefully i will have it encoded and we can hit up a stereo store to check it out [fibes, do you know of a HIGH end stereo joint in town with good **** and a decent listening room?]

i think that song will make for a killer surround mix once i can get ideas formed for it better in surround.... and bring some of my toys to put in the mix [it BEGS for my vortex... and my moogerfoogers]... and we need to get the quad altiverb running there, im dying to hear that in surround. i guess i will have to bring my G4dualGHZ though.

MW, Naw I'm the engineer/guitarist/analog synthesist/psychologist/producer. I only sing after a few beers or when the 10th bamboo shoot goes under my fingernail.
