What about this one, built 1968, not a 19" unit, but it does not care. The studio table is great too....or on top of the rack...

Adam, do you want to sell, or know anywhere I could find an sdsV brain like you have pictured? I'm kicking myself for selling one years ago.

keep an eye on ebay, they come up from time to time. Id never part with mine even though I have 3 of them and dont even use them very often. that is why this is GEARSLUTS!

The best simmons SDS5 example on record is an Australian band called Pseudo Echo (think aussie ultravox ripoff), their first albums drum parts are ALL SDS5 (played, not sequenced) , not just added on as a drum kit extra llike many songs used them. That record is all analog simmons drums, loads of classic synths, recorded on 2" , mixed on NEVE, have a listen if you can find it to hear what warmth really means. http://www.geocities.com/~pseudoecho/index2.html

I have an SDSV that I got directly from Simmons in the 80's. I got the white polycarbon pads to go with it. Maybe I'll have to pull it out of storage and play with it again...

Sure was fun playing those things. Some of the sound guys loved them, some hated them, but they all had a comment to make about them!

For good Simmons sounds, check out King Crimson's Discipline. Bruford used a combination of real kick, real snare, simmons kick and toms....

How about just about all of Van Halens early 80's stuff....

Alex actually had the simmons pads in his drum shells (looked like acoustic drums from the audience) in early tours....

Hot for teacher.......sdsv's all the way.

I want mine back....
I also sold an sds7, which was analog/digital. It had eproms for single drum samples. You carried around an eprom "blower" to make your own chips to change the digital samples. 8 bit glory at about 30 bucks (if i remember) per chip! (damn I'm glad real drums are back)

there was even a mod that would with the use of a ribbon connector and switch box you could toggle between eproms in an outboard box.......super old school....and super expensive.
I made a ton of $$$ on jungles with that box (and an akai s 900) cause not many guys would pony up for it. Kept me working in the early/mid 80's

I'm seriously kicking myself for selling any of that stuff, not thatr it would see that much use...but for that special something....
the Forat F16 is the other box that is SO cool for drums. being able to grab a knob and tune the samples to the track (the sdsV kicks ass for this ecspecially when you've got the trigger to midi mod) is something I really miss. Kinda like the drummers minimoog....really hands on and instant gratification.
I'll add to the list:
Linn 9000 grudge sold it

Love the real thing.....but you gotta here the sdsv dropped in behind an acoustic kik.....add a little white noise or better yet, bring it in an octave below.

a nice little weapon when used sparingly.
