have you ever panned the kick totally in one side?

Yes and if this kicks the needle out during cutting the record how have they done it. Maybe they have cut it with less energy, so that the record was not taht loud as others.

Well lets face it there wasn't such thumping bottom end back in those days so teh aplitude swing/groove depth (or is it width?) would have been much less.

Brendan O'Brien did some K/SNR hard-panning on some STP stuff.

personally I think it is cool when the whole kit is panned but only the room mics/overheads, not the close mics.

Pretty sure The Cardigans have done that - "First Band on the moon" springs to mind

I'm working on a album where on one song we hard panned the kit hard left. straight out of the sixties. another song we mixed mono. sounded great so i left it there.
