Yep, the same old: Dynaudio, Adam, JBL and KRK monitors

Hi,

I'm looking for new monitors for small mixing room... I've narrowed it down by intensive searching on this forum and on google. Here are my main contenders and my minuses after crossreferencing different sources...

Dynaudio BM5A - might be too light on the bass-side
Dynaudio BM6A mkII - not as good as BM6A
Adam P11A - scooped
JBL LSR4326P - metallic tone
KRK VXT6 - fatiguing

I'd like you to point out pros and cons. For me non-fatiguing factor is pretty high. I've ruled out Focal's and K+H because I won't be able to get them for testdrive. The ones above I can but it needs some arranging so I'd like to minimize that. Genelecs I've ruled out... I just don't like their sound eventhough I'd want to... since I'm Finnish

And why would the BM5a be too small?

I sadly just parted with my BM6as (original). IMHO the best speaker in it's price range.

I should elaborate. I spent many more thousands to upgrade and couldn't afford to keep them. I upgraded to K&H 0300's.

I should have said too light on the bass-side. I heard them on store and at that place the bass felt lacking.

Tommi, shame you are ruling out the K + H.

In my opinion, it's the only speaker in your list you could
just buy without hearing and be very happy with.
Difficult to imagine anyone not loving these amazing speakers..they
are in another league to all you have mentioned.

Then again, I've heard them, so I don't need to be convinced

Yeah, it's a shame, I've heard a lot of good things about them... Maybe I'll make few extra calls and see if test-drive can be arranged afterall.

I'm glad to hear you say that, because that's exactly what I did. I've never bought monitors without hearing them before now. They come Thursday and can't wait to hear them. BTW - I bought the older 0198 which is apparently very close to the 0300.

Bass response has a lot to do with placement, room behaviour and source material.

The BM5a claims response at -3dB at 50Hz. That is plenty unless you have the room to support lower frequencies (big or bass traps or both with plenty of room between your head and the nearest wall).

Yeah, that's true. Luckily I'm able to arrange Dynaudio test relatively easily.

Avantones and any cheap amp + anything full range (the little Focals over anything on your list IMO).

I just went through this, still am actually although I think I've made my mind up. I just tested the Focal Solo 6s and the BM6a mkI's and I am almost for sure going for the BM6a's. It came down to the low end and what I needed to be able to hear to mix the way I wanted. The Focals are clear but with out a sub I was just not getting what I needed out of them on the low end. If I add a sub then I am over $3000, which is another level, but for the around $2000 range I think the BM6a (originals) are the way for me. You can still buy them new from several places.

I think I am going to be very happy with the BM6as.

Questeds

Check out the Questeds. You may like those better than any of those listed. Astonishing!
