SM-7

So what is a good price for an SM-7? And should I be looking for an SM-7, SM-7a, or SM-7b?

I think the SM-7b (revised) version of the SM7 was done to further avoid problems with magnetic interference to computers IIRC.
They've been selling for around $300 new on e-bay lately.
As you probably know, a good, strong pre is needed for them.

Define good strong pre. I just bought one off ebay, should be here by next week. My NTK hasn't been doing it for me, EVER. Just too sibilant. I only have my mbox pres until I buy my next purchase, a Great River ME-1NV. Is this a good strong pre? I think I know where the mbox stands...

Thanks Jon.

I can give you guys a "heads up" that a Beyer Soundstar MKII is up for sale at e-bay right now. Cheaper than an SM-7 and also can be a great rock or R&B microphone, especially for a "shouter".
Resistant to sibilance and popping.

Smoother in the low's and mid's than a SM57, and a crisper top end. They usually sell for $100 or less. Their value should start to go up over time though...

I paid US$255 for mine second hand, which aint bad considering thats only AUS$412. Here they retail for AUS$1400!!! Now I can practice being one of those pompous puppet-stringed radio personalities that never play my songs.
