I'm using Ableton, DP, and Reason.. and I've mucked around with Reaper a bit. If that weren't enough I use video, animation, and design software.. never mind all the plugins and whatever... so its like.. I need to be careful to try and do too many things at once (even if I have kinda failed at that a few times over)

A recording engineer that has never had a reason to open a ProTools session?

OK Matt. You win.

I don't remember much hype about this, but it is a specialty piece, so many, including myself when i bought it, were disappointed. However, after experimenting with it and resisting the urge to crank it at 7.5 IPS, I learned to use it to make digital sound analog. It doesn't sound very much like tape, but is even better than tape at canceling the sterility of digital. And compared to any tape plug in, it destroys them. And the ABSOLUTE BEST SCREAMS ever can be recorded with this thing. The most raw guttural screams I have ever heard. It's lightly compressed so it doesn't hurt your ears, and not exactly distorted so it still sounds real.

This is a project I did where I spliced together some lynch short films. Listen to the man and woman saying "matt" the boy's name. They are highly saturated using the portico. Very 70's slasher film/ type screams.

Warning: freaky **** alert.

Many plugins that claim to simulate vintage analog gear. I can't even remember the name, since they are too many.

Focusrite ISA428 (having used the original 110's a bazillion times).

When I got it: "yay!"
After two weeks: "Hmmm ... yeah, still sounds cool but where did the low end go?"
After two months: "Ok, this isn't the 110, but it still sounds kinda warm and stuff"
After four months: "is this thing broken? It's gotta be broken ... "
After five months "honey, what's that thingy doing in the laundry hamper?"
After six months: "ok, I'm done! Who want's it??!!"
After eight months: "Hello?? Anybody??"
After nine months: "dammit".
After ten months: "zzzzzzzz"
After eleven months: sold! for a major loss ... nice.

That is all.

Any "all-analog" synth that has been released in the last 3 years.
Just awful.

There's plenty of things I don't particularly get though, but that's just my taste. Hype is pointless anyways.

I agree except the Sub Phatty. That thing has serious balls.

Dynaudio monitors.
Huge dip in the critical mid range, Low passed at 8kHz, High passed at 100Hz and a bump at 100-200Hz. Makes them sound "very nice" but not very accurate. They can take a lot of punishment though.

High end converters.
Converters are one of the simplest things to ABX test, try it.
