You think Billy Gibbons didn't sweat some Hound Dog stuff?

Licks AND tone on a few ZZ cuts in the last ten years.

Rumblin' low end!

Crap. Now there will be a run on Kawai guitars, just as I was about the corner the market. You had to let the cat out of the bag, didn't you ...

My friend Smokin' Joe Kubek used to play with Freddie right before he died.
Freddie used to play at and hang out at a big rock-n-roll club here in Dallas called Mother Blues.
I saw him in person and on stage a few times.
It was an awesome thing, but because I was in my early '20a and not all that worldly I didn't appreciate what those performances were.

Note that the shirt that those HUUUUUGE lapels are on have red 335 looking guitars on the print!
Someone made that shirt for him..... BADDASSS!

I like Freddies tones because I promise you that it is just that '70s Super on "11" or "stun"

... and Freddie's faces.... what can I say?

He always had a too intimidating persona for me to talk to him although I was on the edge of a few conversations at the bar.
Of course it wasn't stuff about playing.... bar stuff probably... women and other BS.

The rock band I played with Joe Kubek in was briefly managed by Freddie's manager.
R.L. "Hoppy" Hopkins
Hoppy managed Freddy and owned a pretty big auto junk yard, too!
He also had an older white, Caddy limousine that we'd ride around in occasionally.
Hoppy DRESSED like he was Freddy Kings manager, too.
He was a short guy in his late '50s and always wearing kinda' "pimp" looking double-knit suits.... always with a matching bowler hat!
We had a phrase we stole from him.
He was walking into the club (Mother Blues) and admiring all of the hot lil' mommas.
White, late '70s, rockn-roll, hotties.
He said, "Look at all the Mommas, mommas, mommas, momas!"
I have a tape of him saying that.
It wasn't unlike the way Hound Dog sounds when talking.

ahhhhhhhhhh, those were the days!
