Another converter thread: Best 2-ch A/D/A for $2k

It's that time again...

Needs:

- 2-ch A/D and D/A conversion of highest quality possible

- Hopefully 96k ready, so I don't need to upgrade in a year

- Just has to sound *great*, not impress anyone with brand

- Used is a-Ok.

Units I've been looking at:

Apogee PSX-100 -probably used
Mytek Stereo96 ADC & DAC
...

How does the Cranesong HEDD stack up to these?

Are there other units I should be checking out?

The 2 channel Mytek still has a few months to go before it's out. The 2 channel DAC will be out before the 2 channel ADC too. I predict sometime in the summer for the later. The Crane Song HEDD 192 is a great piece, the Mytek and the Crane Song are on the same very high level of quality, just a little bit different sound. The CS is "harder" sounding in the high frequencies to me, it doesn't make either one any better or worse though and they are both accurate and musical.

The Crane Song is more than $2k.

The best price for new I've seen is $2600-2750(if i remember correctly).

The Apogee i didn't personally like(too small sounding and tubby like).

Mytek stuff is pretty neutral(not as musical as the HEDD). I would not hesitate using it for classical or Jazz though.

The HEDD is the best buy out there right now.

Not giving anything up, eh? That's hardly fair.

The good news [!] is that I won't be able to afford any of these for a month or 3 anywho.... grudge

You're killing me here! What if I wait 3 months and miss it because you weren't around to point it out when it comes out. I'm looking at picking up either a Benchmark DAC-1 and ADC-1 or MYTEK duo in about three months. Is there something else that's going to be on another level than these in the same price range or are you just playing with my emotions?

Oh I get it, Tubelovers talkin about Apogee. That's why he doesn't want to tell us anything... He knows that he'll get clowned. We've heard about the Minidac we're not impressed

Why wouldn't you listen to it first?
I have many converters (Troisi, Manley. Digi and Apogee) The Trac2 sounds fantastic. Not the least bit tubby. I would imagine the technology would only improve and it's under $1000. Solid advice would be to wait and listen to the Mini DAC. At that price point it deserves a listen.

Oh I will, I don't have anything against Apogee. I was just trying to get Tubelover to come off with a little info.

info

The new mini DAC is a pretty potent package.
With a USB port and attenuaters onboard as well as sampling rates up to 192k, it might serve in the Swiss Army Knife brigade. There's a lot more info available at their web site: www.apogeedigital.com.

i have an apogee rosetta around which i like well enough. i always thought the stuff i liked better was well above the 2k price point mentioned earlier in the thread. i had the pleasure of using the prism converters and i don't have to tell you how great they are. i suppose the lucid ones are about the same as the apogee or slightly worse.

benchmark is very very nice of course. you shoudl give that a solid look in the under 2k category. probably my first choice if the budget is strictly under 2k. over 2k and you can look at the hedd and the prism and the real fun stuff.

The rosetta (as I understand it) is not intended for the high end market. Having used a Prism, I can say that the Trac 2 is easily it's equal and should be considered in any conversation about high end stuff. Apogee makes a wide variety of stuff for a wide spectrum of the market. I don't think their high end stuff should be excluded just because they make inexpensive converters for a different market.
