I currently use a Rosetta 800 as my converters/interface via X-fire wire. My issue is I have to run the buffer settings pretty high in order to avoid drop outs and distortion. I'm wondering is this the fault of fire wires transfer limitations or my computers processing speed?

I have a P4 3.0 GHz, with 2 gigs of ram. I would be updating to something like a Intel Core 2 Quad with 4 to 6 gigs of ram. Also I will have a faster spinning HD. Will any of this make a difference, will it enable me to operate using lower buffer setting?
