8 Channel Mic Pre - who, what, and how much?

Tried out a demo version of the CLM Dynamics DB8000s and loved it. Found out after not getting it for months that they are waiting on the THAT Corporation 1510 chip due out in the fall. grudge

I'm in the market for a good quality 8 channel pre, what is out there that I should look at and listen to?

I think it would be foolish to not look at the Crane Song Spider...

well .... my first thought goes out to the new digidesign PRE but since I haven't tried it yet I can't really tell you how it sounds .... or rather how it doesn't .... it is supposed to be very very transparant.

The only 8 channel mic pre I ever tried is a Presonus M80. We ordered it for a client and while having it ... hooked it up and tried it out.

I can't say I was stunned about it but it seemed like a very high quality for value kinda pre.

Or four channels of API, four channels of Hardy or a Great River MP-4. Bit more variety. Anyone know if you can load Hardy MP-1 and MP-2 modules into the same frame? Even a bit more variety if you can.

> 8 Channel Mic Pre - who, what

Is there any reason that all 8 have to be in one unit or that they need be all the same? If not, I would agree with the earlier posts that suggest grabbing a few different models. I would grab a pair of API, a pair of old tube units, a pair of Great River or Sytek, mix it up and get a few different sounds. But if I had to choose one sound day-in, day-out, I really like them API's.

The only reason is convience. This is primarily for remote recordings. The thing I do not want is to show up somewhere with big racks of gear and power supplies. The time that I used the DB8000s, it was just what I needed in a compact form. I have a Pendulum Audio MDP-1 in the studio, am thinking about a Vintech to complement it. (gee you sound good...heh )

Never hear of the JLM Audio stuff, looks interesting. Wiggy, do you have a line on these?

I'd be happy with the Grace 801, though I wouldn't buy the remote controlled version.

I don't think he does but Wiggy does have a CLM Dynamics DB8000s and I think SOS mag did a review that gave a good description of things that pretty well agree'd with want I found inside when I lifted the lid. There is an up date coming that may include a Lightpipe output.

As far as JLM is concerned, I have emailed Joe Malone a few times and he is very helpful so if you are interested drop him an email.

Check his site from time to time as I know he has a couple of smaller one and two chanel Mic-pre's on the way that may be more attractive for you guys in the USA to ship over and give a try.

Anybody here used the True Systems Precision 8? One guy over at the DUC said he loved it for tracking drums, which would be my use as well.

Just hoping for a few more opinions...

As far as the Precision 8 pre amp goes. It is a good value for the roughly 2k price. As far as sound it does not have much of a sound. As for me I much prefer the idea of the API's.

Hope that helps

Wow, I just saw this, a reply to my eleven year old thread.

When I first poste, I was master of the punch-in on the adats, and king of the 8 buss Mackie board.

Not sure if I had moved from the '72 Volvo wagon to the '85 yet, Enron was collapsing and so was the economy.

By the way, I did buy the CLM Dymanics box, worked out great.

First , take a look at the Harrison mic pre . From Harrison consoles .
They have 8 channels of 4 different
Years . Cool idea , and Harrison make killer pre's . Sells for around
$ 2200

Next would be a Crane Song Spider.
$ 8000. But , one great unit .

Last , John Harly pre's are killer as well .

But bang for the buck is the Harrison unit .

Or , if you have plenty of money,and want some great tube gear , buy
Pendulum Audio units custom made for you .

This is kind of fun. Thanks for the suggestions, but in the eleven years since I posed this question, I finally made a purchase or two.

Any new responses should reference 2002, either culturally or technology-wise.

By the way, if anyone is interested, I just found some 16 gig drives for under $300! Remember, you would have to partition, OS 9 can not handle such large drives.
