Those don't look like U87's.. they're missing the black ring around the base of the mic. I also don't see the badge in the first one either.

I used to work at Interstate Music...I recall selling a "recording kit" that came with cheap headphones, a cheap cable, a cheap 87 looking mic, all neatly packaged in a cheap canvas bad. I've been trying to locate a link to it but I think they're gone. I swore the mic was made by Studio Projects but I may be wrong.

I like the AKG kick mics... Wow that must sound greeeeeeeat. Just kidding. I've never got a good kick tone out of that mic, I never understood what they made it for. I guess it must sound sweet on that floor tom???

Those are studio projects mics, or rebranded mics from the same factory. I have a pair. I do not recall the model name as it's worn off.

I've double checked and all the details are the same.

I also think the overheads are NT-2's, hard to tell...

The board is an MCI JH416B. Probably 1974ish... I happen to own one that looks almost identical!! Good stuff.

Most likely a live rack that they have a few things they use to record with?

I hate to be a Sh*t, but for a few bucks more per mic he could have had a really nice workhorse collection of mics.

Of course judging on the two AKG kick mics it looks like it might be two or more persons mic collections. I.e. why would you buy two AKG kick mics? (Or even one for that matter! Lol)

Oops.. Edit:

Double bass, and only for a live kit.

Or maybe he likes filled rack spaces. :D

He does have some nice stuff though. a pair of DBX 160VU and 162VU, the 1176, a racked up V72. I think I'd liked to hear the actually recording before I dis the guy. Could be his mic placement looks like that because of the angle the picture was taken at.

I just noticed your credits list... foley artist for "inside deep throat" huh? not that the rest of them don't look interesting, but that one in particular caught my eye.

Graphic EQ's are actually very useful for recording as well as live sound. Try it sometime .

This was a good record.

I use as little eq as possible. It's all in the mics, mic placement and preamps for me. Good mic placement = little eq = better sounding mixes. For me anyway.
Those racks of graphic eq's scare me.

I go the other way, I do good mic placement (I am CONSTANTLY checking phase, moving, and swapping out mics... although I usually end up going back to where I had them at first hahaha murphys law.) once I get it the best that it can I then almost ALWAYS filter and then usually EQ and sometimes compress TO tape. Nothing super drastic, I/whatever mix engineer is contracted in by the label/producer can take the song in whatever direction, but it sounds pretty darn close to done just by throwing the faders up.

Its all personal preference man I totally understand where you are coming from... but give a graphic a shot sometime, you can always pull the patch before slapping record!
