First Multitrack

I did use an M1000 for a while, and after that some Studers, but the first one I actually owned was a TEAC 144. For what it was, not bad! A few of my CDs have some of my earlier efforts on them. The thing I liked the best was, like my next one a TEAC 4 track reel to reel, I didn't have to dress out the sound in any way to have decent sound: no effects, no EQ.

Addendum

For some reason my edit didn't work. Is there a delay, kind of like non synch? Well, here is my add...

OH, if we're talking non-multitrack a reel to reel quarter track that looked like this...

OK, I tried to add an image and I'm told I can't. Here's the URL.

Then a Sony. I also started doing some minimal multitracking with a recorder (don't know brand) with no synch in college. You had to adjust to the delay. Interesting.

I started with an NEC double cassette deck. It had a 2 1/4 mic inputs that I'd come out of the line outs of my Roland GP8 into. I was into superimposing my playing onto songs from albums I'd made up electric violin parts to. It worked surprisingly well when the mix was right, and I messed with a few heads. "Check it out, dude...I'm playing "World's Forgotten Boy" with Billy Idol". Prince's "Electric Chair" was another fave.

It wasn't long before I got a Fostex 160 4- track. Man, if that thing could talk. And then I needed a rhythm section of course so I bought an Alesis HR16. And finally after years of playing along with other people's songs I was writing my own. I still have the 160, and it would need to have some work done. The play button is broken and it's probably got worse issues. Nowadays it sits in a corner in my studio where I can see it... and remember how far I've come.

The year was 1976, I was 16 years old and saved enough to buy a Teac 3340 4 track recorder and a Soundcraft 200B mixer... it was all over after that...
