I thought I cleared in, but still had some "sent messages" being stored I didn't know about. Try to PM me again...

The Ultrafex is nothing like the Mutator. Why do you bring it up? You see my pic next to it in a magazine somewhere? They are a totally bitchin' box as a background vocals sent, both the tube and non-tube version.

Yes, there is a picture.

Yes, it is worth picking up if you need a cool audio filter.

If memory serves, I actually BOUGHT Dave's unit for him as a gift.

There's a lot that goes into Destiny Child's vocals, not just one thing. A lot has to do with the girls themselves. Beyounce is, just amazing to track. Pensado does consistent amazing work IMO. I still think he's underrated.

The Ultrafex is a great value. If you don't like the enhancer, you got an exciter, if you don't like the exciter, you got a spatializer, if you don't like the spatializer, etc... I don't like the bass processor in the unit. (I also hate Behringer's Super Bass unit)

If you do dance or techno music, rush out and get a mutator... If not, I suggest you listen to the samples on the web site and then my your decision. I never do that "Uhm Tsk Uhm Tsk Uhm Tsk" stuff, but I like incorporating the mutator's elements into a lot of the hip hop stuff I do.

Now your mailbox is full... Shesh...

My own experience is similar to what a lot of others have posted -- extreme filtering possible without the Shermann's distortion, makes stuff sound "analog" (just by being in the same room with it!), quality, but quirky.

One of the official drawbacks is that MIDI implementation is not extensive. These guys put MIDI on this thing because the market demanded it, but slobbered over the design of the filter as a true labor of love. Enveloppe triggering is also useful and cool.

In the end, it's one of those things that can't be pinned down by specs.

And sure, it can sit there in your rack for awhile, ignored after the initial "this is cool stage" until one night when you're working on some boring track, frustrated by a square beat or flat performance, shoot it through the Mutator, twirl the knobs, and all of a sudden it turns into the dopest-sounding funky-assed groove you've ever heard.

You could try mutronics sales(at)mutronics.co.uk.
They said they'd fit a midi board in mine. However it's a fairly simple bit of kit when you open it up- should be easy for any fault finder......

Actually, I'd like them to put a midi board in mine too, and maybe they can fix my knob at the same time...that is if they answer emails.

They go steadily from 1600 to 2000 now.
Why?
Nothing sounds better and talking about comparing with the best as Sherman FB. MAM is different, very much and not even close of same league.
Tried few Eurorack modules combined, again different thing, so Mutator is classic and that's it.
Buying them for 400-500 $ 12 years ago means nice 400% tax free gain what is performance not achievable by any legal business except one in million lucky IT startups.

I paid 1600 a couple of years ago for Mutator s/n 001… my tech guy had to create schematics in order to fix it.. one channel had gone out… he was hoping to sell the schematics to recoup the time spent mapping it out. a midi board add on would be nice… i see the later mutators with midi going for 1800-2200 on evilbay

Well 001 is collector's trophy
Actually, compared to multiple single modules doubled for stereo, the price of 1600 (non-MIDI) to 1800-2200 (MIDI) are not unjustified.
Effect is crazy good and that alone has a price.
Manufacturer stopped production due to non-availability of some vintage parts.

the inventor got the circuit boards made .. too many too early … i heard he had to spend hours on each unit hot wiring jumpers to correct for bad planning/ later design changes… drove him crazy on silver solder in some basement for months on end.

That's how often very special gears are produced.
Surely, today someone could try to make clone and optimize production in China, but who knows whether it would sound equally great.
I don't know when exactly and how many there were produced, but several guys use them continuously for more than 15 years with zero issues. I have two, so far, like tanks. Seems that quality of manufacturing was very good indeed.
