about compressors?

do compressors change the tone of a sound? or does it just level it off

There is a big range of hardware and software compressors out there. Some of them can control dynamics and you hardly know it's engaged. Others change the tone immediately, whether it's engaged or not. Some can give pleasing distortion, some affect the eq (many compressors roll off the high end). Some of them breathe and pump and squish in an overtly in-yer-face way.

A compressor can change the tone, but that's not necessarily it's primary function. Simplistically speaking, it controls the range of dynamics.

"tone" is controlled with a filter like an EQ.

To better understand these things before you buy stuff, I highly recommend a book or DVD.

Hi

All of them by varying degrees.... it depends on the circuitry the signal passes through. An opto is effectively a variable resistor with minimal effect on the sound but the manner in which the opto is manipulated by the side chain may create a discernable character to the sound.

The Neve 33609 has a single amplifier for gain make up but three transformers and a wide level change and gain make up, all of which will affect the character of the sound.

FETs and variable mu tube circuits have their own character and probably the cleanest circuit path is the VCA between a couple of op-amps and, fortunately, VCA's are a lot lower distortion and easier to set up than they were 25+ years ago. The Neve VCA fader had around ten preset pots to adjust for best performance.

They mess with the tone, (every curcuit does no matter what it is) ...old tube limiters add vibe, sometimes lots of it, solid-state usually removes some vibe imo.

I think so, each in their own way.

Here for the gear

I'm looking for a compressor that would be best for electronic music, particularly HOUSE/ELECTRO HOUSE. Does anyone have any recommendations?
