Heard the Kinks "Father Christmas" on the radio tonight and it really made my Christmas eve.
Merry Christmas everyone.

Two of my favorites:

Brian Wilson's 'What I Really Want for Christmas' - great arrangements and attention to detail ... like you would expect from Mr. Wilson.

A Rhino compilation, 'Bummed Out Christmas!' - the songlist says it all:

Santa Stole My Santa Claus Suit (The Christmas Jug Band w/Dan Hicks)
Christmas Eve Can Kill You (The Everly Brothers)
Santa Came Home Drunk (Clyde Lasley & the Cadillac Baby Specials)
Don't Believe in Christmas (The Sonics)
Lonely Christmas Call (George Jones)
Christmas in Viet Nam (Johnny & Jon)
Santa Got A DWI (Sherwin Linton)
Who Took the Merry Out of Christmas (Staple Singers)
Who Say There Ain't No Santa Claus (Ron Holden & the Thunderbirds)
Christmas In Jail (The Youngsters)
Christmas Spirit?? (The Wailers)
Christmas In Prison (Doug Legacy & The Legends of the West w/Ry Cooder)

Merry Christmas fellow gearslutterz!!

So much great Christmas music. It seems to bring the best out of so many artists. I do love that Amy Grant album. It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year - That song on that album still gives me goose bumps. Absolutely stellar arrangement and sung to perfection. And of course the recording. Wow! And it just came on my internet radio as I'm in the middle of typing this. How 'bout that for a Christmas miracle. :-)

This song soars!

Merry Christmas to all my fellow Gearslutz!

Yes Yes Yes - It's so relaxed. Also like the Carpenters "Portrait" and of course Nat.

What about the Alvin and the Chipmunk's Christmas album? A perfect example of audio engineering genius for its time. Its astounding to think what they had to do to put that together, considering how much easier it would be now. It has truly stood the test of time. My kids...LOVE it! I on the other hand can appreciate it, but will be happy when it gets put away until next year.

I have a HUGE Xmas collection...

Some of my faves:

Tractors: A Tractors Xmas

Ray Charles Xmas

Ella Wishes you a Swinging Christmas

A Flintstones Xmas (really!)

Huey Smith and the Clowns (New Orleans Christmas funk with Dr. John and a bunch of groovy cats)

Take 6 "he is Christmas"

Santa Clause Boogie/Santa's Secret - features the original 'Santa Claus is Smokin Reefer' by Slam Stewart, and other Yule Gems from hipsters like Charlies Parker and more

The first Elvis Christmas Album -- absolutely mandatory. Santa Claus is Back in Town, White Christmas, Santa Bring My Baby Back to Me -- YOWZAH!

Christmas with Jimmy Smith, Booker T. and the MG's Xmas, james Brown "Santa's Got a New Bag" (Santa Claus - Go Straight to the Ghetto!)

And of course The Yobs! II (featuring Oy Santa, and a very rude take on Guantanamera)

---

And I haven't even started listing the cool Xmas 45's yet.... next year.

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY!!!!!!!

you have to hear this, it's a little dark (moody, not sonically) and starts out a little slow and droning but it totally kicks it.
i know it's 2 days after christmas but here it is anyway.

I know this thread is 10 years old, but rather than starting a new one I thought I'd add to this with my pick of "Snoopy's Christmas" by The Quiet Jungle:

The Quiet Jungle was a Toronto band back in the late 60's and while the Royal Guardsman did the original "Snoopy's Christmas", I prefer the Quiet Jungle version (especially the keyboards, yes it's corny but it's not Christmas without it):

I was probably given this record when I was about 5 years old (although my copy is cleaner than the YouTube videos, but I used an audio cleaner).

I'm not going to link to it, but in the "White Christmas" track the band added the lyrics, "There's Never Been Such A White Snow In Old T.O." The part that goes "T.O." refers to "Toronto, Ontario" (hey, they were a Toronto band). But we don't get snows like that anymore.

For me, Christmas isn`t Christmas until I have listened to this:

Celebrate, rejoice, rise up and praise these days,
glorify what the Highest has done today!
Abandon despair, banish laments,
sound forth full of delight and happiness!
Serve the Highest with glorious choruses,
let us honor the name of the Supreme Ruler!

IMO, there is no music like Johann Sebastian Bach`s, and this great Youtube-video is recorded in the Frauenkirche in Dresden, a church so beautiful that it brings tears to my eyes. And, yes, I have been inside that church.

My favorite is still The Mormon Tabernacle Choir doing all the favorites - there is probably an actual title to it but at the moment it is not within my grasp.

Oddly I am not a religious fellow and tend to shy away from anything with religious connotations however when I hear Oh Holy Night on this CD the hair on the back of my neck still stands up.

Wouldn't it be nice if retail stopped rewriting the lyrics to carols and stopped using them in commercials?

OMG - NO please NO. One of my past jobs at one of the corporate evil empires we used to try and mess with each other by planting some tune in everyone's head that would stick there all day. The two that always got to me were Burl Ives rendition of "Have A Holly Jolly Christmas" and Alvin and the Chipmunks doing "I Just Want My Hula Hoop".

Damn, now they are in my head.....I am toast for the rest of the day.

Oh relax. The only ones most of them use are Deck the Halls and Jingle Bells -- the ones that are both PD and non-Jesus. And once in a while, Good King Wenceslas.

A Christmas classic from back when so many of our fathers and grandfathers were away fighting WWII...

"Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," sung by Judy Garland.
