Recently a manager said he wanted to come and approve mixes with the band (fine with me) but that he also wanted to run them past a new promotions person and be able to come back to me with any changes...

This pisssed me off somewhat, I felt he was lacking in backbone, my normal deal is the band and anyone closely associated with the project can come to the studio...

Anyhow, I responded that any changes insisted on by this new person or anyone else (that I hadn't been introduced to already) would be chargeable at a ( VERY high $$$) per day extra rate above the agreed budget. This was a threat. The manager IMHO was in error about to invite someone not normally used to mix approval to approve these up coming mixes.

So I became mildly aggressive to back him off, concentrate his mind and teach him a lesson (after all I am not invited to comment of promotion strategy or artwork selection!) I DID however offer if they HAD to be involved they should come down to the mix and speak up in front of everyone...

Unfortunately my personality can tend toward the 'abrasive' / combative nature. I regret I can't say I am a very smiley 'everything's cool type'. I work on short projects most of the time, probably for good reason...

What have you threatened or lied about with your clients / artists for the good of the project?

I find a lot of my job with upcoming Alt Rock acts is "managing" the managers.

The truth in these situations is always more effective. You are the expert, remind them of that.

Sometimes extra $$$ is the only way to win respect for your time and a clients confidence in your work.

If a client is hemming and hawing about scheduleing I'll remind/threaten them that other projects are booked and that their available time slot may disappear if they wait too long. I try not to lie to clients (or anybody really), lies always come back to bite me in the butt (and I'm a lousy liar too!) So mild threats/gentle reminders YES, lies NO.

Call the promotions guy down to your studio, and then head-butt him across the bridge of the nose.

No, seriously though...

I've learned the hard way that: Laying down the law firmly, but calmly and professionally, is the best way.

But you were essentially correct in refusing to let the "art by committee" paradigm take hold.

Recently, I have been twice forced to punish commercial soundtrack clients with extra billings, in retaliation for what I percieved as an unprofessional and/or disrespectful shenanigens. I try to explain to them that it's for their own good: that it keeps the project on track, on deadline and on budget.

One was a feature-film director. He reacted with a huge display of macho anger and indignation...but I stuck firmly to the script, and he eventually caved.

The other was a short industrial filmaker. I calmly let him indulge himself in a purile lecture about "how artists can be..." after which he wrote me a check.

It's a jungle out there.
