LDC shootout/comparison...

so yesterday i got a chance to pair up a couple of my "prosumer" mics against a couple of "industry standard" mics to see how they'd hold up. of course i ended up with my own judgement at the end, but i'll keep my opinion to myself for now.

signal chain:
steinway grand piano-->mic-->grace 801-->digi 192 i/o-->protools HD

since the grace has stepped gain controls, i applied the same amount of gain to all 4 mics. of course you'll probably want to match the levels to compare, but i though it would be interesting to capture the difference in output/sensitivity between them. no processing was used after the fact, and the placement was as simple and straighforward as possible.

anyways...here's links to the 24/96 wav files(about 19MB each)

and 192kb mp3's for those who don't want to stomach d/l'ing the wav's

I like #4 the best. #3 is second best, I think.

#1 sounds fullest. #2 has nice high end. #4's high's seem unnatural. #3 is 414-ish.

I matched the levels and I think #2 has the most authentic sound.
That would probably be my choice,it was the only one that clearly let me hear the piano wasn't in tune and hasn't been for a while.
