Mic Cables to Control Rooms: Patch Bays, or other solutions?

Hey all,

I'm about to order snakes for my new studio. We've got five wallplate/breakoutboxes around the live room and ISO booth, with either 8 or 12 inputs. They're snakes, and they go straight to the racks in the control room.

16 preamps. 40 mic outputs from all the various inputs. What's the best way to facilitate patching? Are there better, more application-specific pieces of hardware, or is the best solution just to get a huge patchbay?

Just a bunch of panel mount XLRs and a handful of short mic cables....
