I think the dynaudios and Adam A7's fall into that range. Have experience with they dynaudios ,and they are fine, fit into a small space well, good sound. I am curious to how the New Mackie 824 mkII sound.

I thought 'thou shalt not use cans for monitoring/mixing'?

Good cans are better than a bad room - usually by a lot.

Interesting. What cans would you consider 'good'?

Sorry But I disagree, I wouldn't mix just with headphones, not to mention in the long run, its harder on your ears.

I lke my HD280s, but there are lots over here:
HeadRoom - Right Between Your Ears

Look for neutral ones that are comfortable.

Make sure to check your mixes in a decent sized room on decent speakers from time to time as well.

As for listening too loud - don't do it with headphones or monitors.

cans vs monitors

A pretty famous producer/guitarist/mixer guy once told me that the piece of gear that changed his world the most was a pair of Sennheiser HD650 headphones---he said he couldn't afford the monitors he wanted---and the HD650s helped him do his first acceptable pro mixes---helped him hear what was happening in the midrange, etc.

I haven't bought any---it's hard to make myself buy $500 headphones...

As far as a "bad sounding" room goes----it's not real expensive to treat a room and make it sound a lot better. I recently bought a bunch of 24x24x2 foam from here:

Sound Proofing Foam Products, Acoustic Foams, Acoustical Products, Bass Absorbers, Blocks

And backed it with 1/4" plywood, making a whole bunch of stiff little baffles. It has improved my 10 x 12 plaster and drywall room a whole bunch---and i can use the baffles to make a faux vocal booth or isolate a guitar amp.

Very cool.

Can anyone tell me this: do NS10M tweeters just get 'tired'? Mine just don't sound very bright and aggresive like the used to. I am powering with a Yamaha P2200. Just wondering if I should just sell the NS10M's and the amp and get some new powered boxes....

Here for the gear

Studio monitors under £1000

Reviving this thread for 2015/16. Looking for good monitors to accompany my tannoy elipse 8. What you guys all using? Used for tracking and mixing bands of most genres. I know there isn't any treatment on the wall but it's a new wall and will be treated soon. Thanks in advance

At the £1k price bracket, the Neumann KH120A would top my list.
