Bjork in Toronto: What was this instrument!?

Just got home from seeing Bjork perform at Toronto Virgin Music Fest. It was an excellent show, but I was even more impressed to see the electronics/beat guys working some magic with some tools i've never seen.

Most notably was a horizontally mounted, circular (~2 foot diameter), touch-sensitive, LCD-type display/table. In the middle of the display was a the image of a circle that emitted a pulse that was synced to the beat of the song. Now here's the crazy part. All around this circular display were what appeared at first glance to be about 30 or so square wooden pucks of sorts. They had little images on top: some of sine waves, others sawtooth, and others with what appeared to be circuit diagram looking images. Anyway as the musician placed one of the 'pucks' on the display surface it generated a tone. But not only did it generate a tone, but there was a visual link between the pulsating circle and this puck. As the guy turned the puck (as if he were turning a knob) the display changed and reacted, as did the sound. He added puck after puck and the thing just starting spewing out intense sounds. He could 'connect' one pucks activity to another, or he could start a new unique sound.

From what i gather it was a multiple oscillator device.. a tone generator/synth... But with a very intuitive, definitively hands on method operation. A futuristic approach to the analog modular synth it seems.

Does anyone know what the hell this thing is?
