U Decide for me. Sputnik V.S. AT 4050

The Situation: I have been set on getting sputnik for some time now but have been busy at work and have been putting off the purchase. I subbed for a band in studio last week and I had some time to play with the mics available. I am in need of a Multipattern condenser mainly for background Vox, Room Mic, Maybe front of Kick and various other places. Long story short I ended up trying an AT 4050 and really liking it but of course they didn't have a sputnik to A/B against.

Oh wise ones show me the way

BTW here's my list of pres.
UA La-610
Chand Germanium
Summit audio 2ba 221 x 2
API lunchbox w/ two purple 500's and 2 api pre's

4050 is great on everything because it is pretty natural, and it lets the source come through. color and personality are added through the rest of the signal path.

sputnik is great also, but not great on everything in the way that the 4050 is. it does have somewhat of a "character" which is nice, and will make it better in some situations, but overall, i think you'll have a heckuva time finding something that is a versatile and dependable as a 4050.

get the 4050 and add the sputnik or another mic down the road.
just my 2 cents.

4050 first, then some 635a's and RE-15's.

Audio-Technica 4050 (incl. CM5) is the Camry of LDC multi-pattern. Plain-looking, reasonably-priced, comes with comfortable shock-mounts, works every time. Like the Toyota, the AT4050 is backed up by a big Japanese-America company that wants you to be happy.

Cheers.
