Question about neve 8816 & fader control

I'm looking at getting an 8816 summing mixer and really want the faders as well, but they dont have automation which sucks.
So would I be better off for the same price getting something like a Mackie Control plus an extender?
Only problem with this though, is that I'm under the impression that you want to be using the head-room in the summing mixer and using the full bit-depth of my convertors.
Is this right?

24 bit converters allow you to go below 'full bit-depth', but point is valid and 8816 (as well as any summing box with volume pot) will allow you to change tracks' level in analogue domain what might be better (specially with lower level signals) than to reduce but depth on digital side.
Obviously Mackie Controller will do its job purely in DAW without impact on analogue summing box and unfortunately there are still no affordable solutions for automatable analogue mixing.
